Is finding unknown resources a common thing? Is it significant in anyway? Are these new as of yet undiscovered things that could be of use to someone?


Sorry to sound niave, but I known little about mining...

Hmmmmmm don't know. Not sure I've ever seen an unkown resource.

It's not significant. It's just another resource type. For example, an unknown non-ferrous metal can be used in anything that needs inorganic, metal, or non-ferrous metal, but not if it specifically needs Copper or Aluminum.
