What does the practice button do when crafting? Do you still get xp?

Yes you still get xp, in fact you get a bit more than you would had you crafted the item. It think its a 5% bonus.

Given the choice between style over substance. I'll take a sandwich.

Yes, it uses up resources just like normal, only you don't receive an item, you get the xp bonus instead.

You get 5% more XP and no item for doing practice crafting.

If you have practice mode enabled, it converts the item into xp.
