Okay so I'm using a generic crafting tool away from a crafting station. I'm trying to create a Fanfar, which is a musical instrument that only needs metal as an ingredient. So I bought myself some cheap iron. Now I can make the item okay, but when I'm finished andthe completed instrument isin my inventory, I look to see what XP I got, but I'm getting no XP whatsoever. What's the deal? Any ideas?

Sounds like a bug. I had the same problem. Log out then back on, that should fix it and your XP will be adjusted accordingly.

Yeah. That's what I thought at first too. But I logged off, came back, and no difference. Weird. I keep making the instrument and I'm getting nothing at all for it.

Well, when crafting you won't get notices on the screen announcing how much XP you've just got, unlike a lot of the other skills.

So, are you looking at your XP monitor? There is a known bug with the XP monitors not updating sometimes, but behind the scenes the system is recording the XP properly, so don't panic.

Are you trying to get artisan experience? Crafting musical instruments gives you music xp I think. If you want to get artistan xp fast, grind survey tools until engineering 1 , then grind crafting tools til 3, from then on grind on wind gens for 450xp per grind.

Yup. I am looking at that. No change there. Also, I've logged and restarted a couple of times. I'm not getting any XP.

Hehe. That might be the problem. Whoever thought of giving music XP for crafting? Doesn't seem very smart to me.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. Hopefully this will help me to start catching up.

That was the problem. Thanks everyone for coming to the aid of a confused newcomer, and especially to Atreus who figured out what my problem was and gave me tips so that I can catch up.

In general, schematics give xp of the same type required for the skill box that schematic is learned in. The Fanfar schematic is gained in the music branch of entertainer, so you get music xp. Camps and traps give some type of scout xp (I can't remember if it's scouting or survival, though). Stims give medical crafting xp.

For general crafting xp, you'll need to make items learned in Artisan skill boxes. If you take up an advanced crafting profession (weaponsmith, droid engineer, tailor, etc), you'll have to make itemsfrom skill boxes in that professionto gain xp for that profession.
