Everyone who plays Galaxies.

Deposit powerand checkmineral statustoo.

Just make it cost a little bit - I dunno, 100 credits per use for remote management. And you have to actually go to the harvester to collect its contents.

This would be a WONDERFUL idea. My harvesters sit on Rori, but i spend most of my time on Tatooine with a friend. Every few days, I have to hop on a shuttle to check the maintenance and power. Depending on how much is in the hopper, I'll empty it. If we could pay our maintenance fees remotely from a terminal, then it would cut down my time and credits taking the shuttle back and forth. I know...I should probably just uproot those and put some down on Tatooine, but I'm pretty happy with where they are now.

Exactly why maintenence terminals are a BAD idea. The idea is that to get the best resource pockets you have to search them out and WORK towards it. With a maintenence terminal, even a marskman can place a harvestor and make profit from it. The way the system is now, if you want to run a lot of harvestors you need to get out there and constantly maintain your harvestors by hand, which keeps those who can't cut it from mining (a large percentage) and hence keeps the resources competitive. I am afraid that a system like that might make harvesting too easy, and the market would be flooded with 1cr per unit link steel and the like.

Who here wants terminals in the city where you could pay maintanence?

The terminal would be the same as using a RLweb browser to transfer cash from your savings account to checking instead of walking to the physical bank.

That is what I've need arguing all along. It would make me feel less tied to my harvesters without really making it "easier." I'll just be able to monitor and protect (from burning) effectively.

Using a terminal (or perhaps a personal data-pad that goes into your inventory, craftable by an artisan at eng IV) that could tell you the STATUS of your harvestors, without letting you modify them, would be a great idea. Either that, or at least e-mail notification when Harvestors run out of power, maintenence, or is no longer able to get the resource they need.

I'd like to see the terminal as a installable device for the player's home...

go to one place, check status and pay maintenance. Power and hopper have to be managed localy.

Exactly! I don't know how many times I've been at my computer and remembered that I need to gas up my car or get the oil changed. Before the Internet I had to actually do maintenance on my vehicle, now I just go to www.fixmycar.com, click on a few buttons and viola, my car is full of gas and oil.

I can't imagine how life must have been in the old days when I would have had to take my car to a gas station to get fuel or, oh the funky horror, open the hood to add oil and do other car tune up type things.

Seriously people, I'm really trying to kick the sarcasm habit. Help me out here, put a little thought into what you ask for. How can you do physical maintenance on an object remotely? At least the maintenance droid idea had some merit. Buy a droid with a set of harvester management modules that you could send on missions to fuel, maintain and collect from your harvesters and then take the chances that it will be eaten by mynocks on the way.

Um, how is putting oil in your car like putting money in a harvester? It's not like we're topping off the petrochem resevoir or replacing metal panels. Ok, if you think of it on one level, that money is going towards the physical machinary upkeep, but the in-game implementation is just a pool of credits. I know I'm not spending that money on replacement parts, lubing the joints, or adjusting the connections. I throw money at it, and it slowly dwindles away; whether I'm standing there "maintaining" it or not. And if you can do a "/tip Luke 100bank" to a player standing in front of you, in another city, or on the other side of the galaxy (without even having to be at a bank terminal), I can't see why a similar system couldn't be in place toallow you to add to a harvester'scredit pool.

I'm just trying to come up with something that makes sense in the world the developers have given us without throwing things too out of whack. Sure, if you had to pay maintenance with cash on hand, using a terminal would be stupid. Of course, then they'd have to add an animation showing you plugging credits into your harvester like a slot machine.

And sadly, www.fixmycar.com isn't operational yet. If it were still 1999, you could've gotten some serious venture capital for that idea.

I'd be for this with one qualification: The only interactive option available is paying maintenance. Not switching resources, not depositing power, and definitely not removing resources. Depositing maintenance is already done from your bank account, so there's some "techno-magical" system connecting your personal bank account with the harvesters' maintenance pools. The terminal would be the same as using a RLweb browser to transfer cash from your savings account to checking instead of walking to the physical bank.

Given that, I think the proper benefit of terminals is to use them to check the status of your harvesters: remaining time in maintenance/power pools, current resource efficiency, hopper capacity. Those nice dense pockets of high quality ore are always way out in the boonies. If I've got what I need on-hand, I'd rather not have to make the 30 minute or more run (usually dodging aggro "instant death" mobs) just to check whether there's been a resource shift, if maintenance/power has disappeared on me, or sometimes I just forget how far in advance I've paid it up so I don't know if it's burning down on me.

I think that type of setup might be enough to remove the non-fun tedium of mining while still making things challenging enough that not every pistoleer has his mineral extractors sitting on that 90%+ spot I wanted.

I certainly hope they never implement Maintenance terminals. Mining andfarming are laborious professions, and shouldn't be as easy as just clicking a button next to the Cantina. If running around tending harvesters isn't fun for you, pick another profession, reduce your number of harvesters, or wait until we have vehicles.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but you might as well ask for Combat terminals that spit out creatures for Marksmen to kill.

My interpretation was that it was a first approximation to actually having to pay for parts and materials for maintenance. Personally I'm glad its just a slot machine at this point. Otherwise I might be whining to uncle Owen about having to schlep my @$$ to Anchorhead to pick up some power converters.

I'm sure the idea of maintenance parts and materials came up in development meetings at least once but its not really core to the game.

I still like the harvester maintenance droid idea myself.

Here, here!

Actually I think it would be nice to just have remote monitoring of harvestors. I call them up on my datapad and see all the vitals. Can see theiroperational status etc.. Then just do transfers. Heck I can transfer money to players, why not to my harvestors. If we have the technology to make nuclear, laser light cannons (or whatever), why not remote monitoring of harvestors. This harvestor thing is really taking up too much artisan time.
