I have been surveying around tatoinee and corellia for about 2 hours now and ive only got one box of surveying and about 1/3 of the second box, is there any other ways to get surveying xp?

/sample is the only way you can get survey xp...sorry no alternatives
to get the most xp though, make sure that you are on a high % spot for the resource you are sampling. it increases the chance of retrieving something and therefore more xp. the amount you get with each sample does not change the amount of xp awarded afaik although its been awhile 
it is slow, but you should be able to complete the whole tree in about 12 hours or less

You will thank yourself if you check out one of the recent threads on how to macro your sampling so that you can do it AFK. It is so simple that even a macro dummy (like me) can figure it out, and I don't think anyone will think less of you for doing this AFK.
