Im a new artisan and am looking to get into the mining business. What should i be looking for as far as stats when going out and looking for resources like steel and aluminum. I see that every resource has different stats in different areas how am i supposed to know which quality to look for in a resource. Does it vary with what ur crafting? And does the item ur crafting tell u what quality it needs in the schematic. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks in adv.

If you look at an item's schematicin your datapad, it will have the experimental categories listed (like damage, efficiency, and range for weapons), along with the resource stats that contribute to that category and a percentage showing how much that stat contributes. You can use any quality resources you want (there is no "minimum quality" required to make the item), but the higher the relevent stats, the higher you will be able to experiment that category.

So let's say you're looking for resources to make Swoops. The only experimental category on vehicles is Durability (how many hit points it has), and the only stat contributing to that category is Shock Resistence. So you'll want to find Non-ferrous and Ferrous metals with as high an SR as you can.

As another example, personal harvesters have two categories to experiment on: Efficiency (which determines the extraction rate) and Storage (the size of the hopper). Efficiency depends on 25% HR, 25% SR, and 50% UT. This means that while all three contribute to the efficiency, Unit Toughness contributes more, so resources with very high UT (say 900+) and mediocre HR & SR will probably give you a better result than resources that are good in all three (say 750). Storage depends on Unit Toughness and Malleability, again with UT contributing the most. And since most people prefer higher extraction rates than larger hoppers, for these you'll want to look for resources high in UT, pretty good in HR and SR, and if you can also get high MA, then that's a bonus.

In general, "good" resources have stats greater than 700, "great" resources are above 800, and "uber" resources are above 900. This can get more complicated with higher-level items, since those require more specific resource types ("Plumbum Iron" instead of just "metal"), and you start having to deal with resource stat caps. Some resource categories have a max on stats, so to evaluate their quality, you have to understand those caps. There's a listing of known caps over on the swgcraft forums which is a pretty good reference.
