Thread: Holy Data Batman!

I was working towards Surveying 4 today (the last skill I need before I can get Master Artisan), and I decided to take some data Conveniently I only had 2 Surverying XP when I started taking data, so it was really easy to keep track of everything. Anyway, on to the product of my boredom! hehe

Resource: Nite Aluminum (Tatooine)
Resource Concentration: 70%
Player Surveying Skill-Mod: +70
TotalExperience Earned: 4625
Total Resources Attained: 960 units
Total (Successful) Samples Taken: 150
Average Experience per Sample: 30.8
Average Resources per Sample: 6.4
Samples that must be taken to get Surveying 4: 325 (10k xp at 30.8 xp per sample, it's actually 324.7 but you can't take .7 samples hehe)

Total Data Set:

Exp - Occurances
20 - 4
21 - 2
22 - 7
23 - 7
24 - 8
25 - 5
26 - 9
27 - 6
28 - 5
29 - 9
30 - 14
31 - 8
32 - 8
33 - 8
34 - 5
35 - 6
36 - 8
37 - 5
38 - 10
39 - 11
40 - 1
41 - 1
47 - 2
49 - 1

Things I found interesting:

The highest numbers (41, 47, 47, and 49) were all received after getting the pop-up window notifying me of a large concentration. The interesting part is that 3 out of the 4 attempts resulted in only recovering part of the concentration (the fourth being a total recovery), yet I still got about the same amount of experience.

Ireceived 21 experience points for the second time when I took my 149th sample. Nothing worth note, I just thought it was funny that in 148 samples I only received that amount of experience one time!

My original guess was that the Average Experience per Sample would be 30. Since I did all of this on a TI-85 calculator I was able to watch the Average change with every sample I took, and the whole time the number kept bouncing above 31 then below 31, above it, below it. My original guess was close, but 31 would have been even closer

This relates to the point right above this one.... When I took my 101st sample the Average Experience per Sample came out to exactly 31! I was creeped out! haha

My calculator was ran the following "equation" for the 150th sample. I used this set up the entire time (I can recall the last entered equation so I could just change the numbers with every sample taken) to track all of this:
((20*4)+(21*2)+(22*7)+(23*7)+(24*8)+(25*5)+(26*9)+(27*6)+(28*5)+(29*9)+(30*14)+(31*8)+(32*8)+(33*8)+(34*5)+(35*6)+(36*8)+(37*5)+(38*10)+(39*11)+40+41+(47*2)+49)/150

And now my fingers really hurt haha

Anyway, I just did this because sampling isn't very entertaining, and I'm a big nerd who likes playing with numbers! I thought you all might find this interesting, so I decided to post it all here. I was tried graphing the data in MS Excel, but it didn't show anything actually worth looking at so I scrapped that. So, enjoy!

ohh my god you were bored, Dont know what to do with the data seeing ive been a master artisan since launch, my first profession. Back when there where no harvesters and the only way to make stuff was through sampling : )

Anyways maybe someone will find it usefull, sampling can be a boring hobby and frusterating,, i cant tell you how many times ive failed on a 75% pluss spot 4-5 times in a row

I guess that is why I sampled while I slept. Good data though. I think I'll just have my harvesters pull it up.

Yeah the only thing missing from all this data (that I didn't think of until I was over 100 samples into this) is the total samples taken and how many failures there were. But oh well, this is enough boredom induced data for me!

Very good data. If anyone can do this for survey 1-3 please do so! Here would be a useful way to present it if you want to just write it down using notepad:

Aluminum, 71% concentration
Novice Artisan, Survey +20

Amount, Exp, Count
fail, fail, 30
5, 20, 2
5, 21, 3
5, 22, 4
5, 23, 1
6, 22, 2
6, 23, 4

If you keep a count of failures and the percent concentration I can hand the devs the numbers and say "This is what we're seeing. It feels to low. Is this a bug?"

Yeah I really wish I had kept track of failures, but it was far too late to start when I realized I should be doing it. Seeing this for Survey 1-3 would be very interesting data for comparisons sake.

Awesome data. My question is how you can resourcesample 325 times to get survey 4? I'm at that point now and really don't want to sit through 325 samples. "Sampling while you sleep" sounds nice, but won'tyour char just stop sampling when they get"tired" after a few samplings? I'm assuming that you used a macro then I'm not aware of. I've tried to set up a sampling macro but with little luck. Is there a macro for sampling that someone would be willing to shareperhaps that would work for this?

Thanks,

Wow, you did alot of analyzing while you were sampling. I had to grind the last 2 boxes of surveyalso last week, and the only thing productiveI managed to do was drink coffee, smoke butts and read the forums.
