I've been radioactive miner for awhile now and I've done fairly well, especially once I mined radioactive exclusively.
I'm curious if people out there focus on just doing water though. I recall Talus water for docs and other water for chefs are good, and that nobody likes to mine water and that the % yields are lower out there.
So, is anyone a water specialist? please tell your story here. I'm considering an alt as a 'moisture farmer' but I thought I would get a feel for what it is like to do this.
thanks

Water simply isn't used enough to be worthwhile. Chefs and Docs use it but only in very small amounts. Talus water is mainly what you would want to mine as it's a specific resource for docs and Chefs as I recall just use generic water. Most items only require very small amounts of water (ie. ALS for docs require 6 units of water). So 6,000 units of water will make me a full 1,000 unit run. I can easily harvest 100k units with a single harvestor per spawn if I catch the full spawn and that's roughly 16,500 units. More than most docs will go through in a very long while.

I am not a water specialist, but I am amedical and chef resource specialist, so I stock a lot of water. As others have pointed out, the first problem with water is that nothing uses huge quantities of it. This is unlike the business you are used to - radioactive - or something like ore. The second problem with water is the lower concentrations. I have to price my water at 1.5 times the price of similar quality berries or corn just to make the same profit. The thrid problem with water is the limited options you will have. At any given time there will be 10 (to 12 or 13 since planets occasionally have more than 1 water spawn available) waters to harvest. But it's quite possible that none of these will be very good. For doctors, you really need Talusian water with OQ > 900 (over 950 to be really good). For chefs, you're looking at OQ + DR of at least 1600 (and ideally over 1800). You just don't have a good spawn all the time. 600 OQ Talusian water may sell, buy it won't sell in volume very well (or at any sort of premium price). This is again, unlike radioactive, where a 550 PE radioactive isn't great, but you can still move it pretty easily.
I really don't know how well a water specialist would do. I know you could get customers who would prefer to keep their harvesters on things other than water. I just don't know how well this would scale.

There's no money in water!!! Don't harvest it, don't sell it - don't even touch it... it'll cause a nasty rash!!!
(I've been doing pretty good with water. No big money like some resources can bring in but making a consistent positive cash flow.)

Architects need 500 water per fountain. Admittedly there probably isn't a HUGE market in fountains now with tons of Archies and most of the city booms are over and done, but still =P

I will periodically mine small amounts of water with a personal havester if one of the stats is 900+. I can usually sell it on the Bazzar for 2CPU or higher and make a nice, but not huge, profit. It tendsto sell out fairly quickly. I guess it depends on what scale of profit and sales you are looking for. This tends to be how I make the majority of my $$$ as an artisan. Not sure how the end of grinding will affect this approach, we will see!
