Thread: Hunting hides as an artisan

Need advice on how to hunt as a weak artisan. I know I won't be great unless I put more points into fighting skills but would like to be able to hunt to collect my own hide/bones. At the moment I am rifle3 pistol3 support3.

If I get missions with my weapon equipped I usually end up incap at least once for each mission - very time wasting. So if I just want hides I unequip weapons and get much lower mission but at least no incap. At the moment though I can't seem to get anything that gives hide only bone/meat.

At the moment I use rifle headshot (mind damage) from afar, if it gets to me (which evens nearly always do) I swap to pistol bodyshot but thats health damage so effectively I have to start all over again to kill it. Maybe I should just stick to pistol all the way (also will save me some training points)?

Should I buy a tank pet or droid (I have no idea what sort to buy)?

Should I buy armor and/or better weapons?

Or perhaps I should just buy my hides from real fighters (though they are hard to find in my quiet corner of the universe Talus on Chimaera).

I would give up the rifle. It's a terrible solo weapon, especially when you low level. Pistol would be the way to go. It's the fastest at low level, and takes less ham. Get to the second box (I think) and use a scout blaster. I don't know how they differ between servers, but even at the marksmen level it's really fast. Look for something below a 2.0 speed. Get it sliced.Another reason you'll want pistol, especially the scout, is because you'll get a great "point blank" bonus. So, when the critter closes on you, you won't miss all the time and have to wait 4+seconds to shoot again like your probably doing with therifle. Once you get heathshot, use it almost exclusively and you'll drop them in no time because your focusing on just one of their bars. Also try and get tothe third box in ranged support. Then you can fight*some* higher level creatures because you can use warning shot along with health shot to keep the critters away from you and not get hit. Once you do, you'll have no problem killing low level lairs that you'll pull on your missions and maybe kill a few things you shouldn't really be able to.The only problem with pistol is that shooting from a distance will give you bad accuracy, but it's really not that bad, and the much faster rate of fire will make up for the few extra misses. I don't think Republic Blasters have a cert yet, so I believe anyone can use them. Get you one of those if you can, they have great bonuses, as good as a lot of rifles, for distance.

A pet for a tank would be a great idea too. No droids, pets are much easier. I'm not sure what the non-CH pet to get is right now, but you should be able to find out with a little time on the CH boards. This would be a great way to go, especially if you don't care to get weapon xp. Just have the pet go in first and draw the critter's attention. Let it get a hit or two, then shoot away. Unless your pet falls or you get really close, it should never turn it's attention towards you. Just invest in some decent pet stims and you'll be able to do this all day long.

Armor you do not need. It'll do you more harm than good for your purposes unless you want to hunt something on your own that is really tough. Get armor that is good vs. kinetic damage, put on a full suit, get some good doctor's buffs and you can kill some pretty tough critters with the right strategy.

As faras the skills to get... get to ranged supportIII. Warning shot can save your hide many many times if used correctly. And then, pick up as many pistol boxes as possible.Make sure you keep a few different pistols on you to for different damage types. I would say if you get to Pistol IV at least have a scout, and fwg, and a republic blaster. If you can afford to take Novice pistoleer, then graba DX2 as well. This should cover any resists on creatures that you face. Be warned though, the more boxes you take, the tougher the missions will get. So if you go up to Pistol IV and find it getting too tough for your tastes, drop back down to box III.

You can do this allday long, but if you wantany serious amounts of hide, you'll want to make a few friends that huntadvanced planets to bring you hide. One hour on Dathomir, Lok, Yavin, etc cannet more hides than you'll be able to gather all day.If they don't mind baby sitting you, you could make a deal with them to go to the planetwith them. Give them back all or some of the credits you earn from missions, if they're doing mission, or pay them a set fee to let you go with them. Then you can gather hides asyou kill things, and maybe they'll give you some of the ones they get to, or you can buy them. I have a few friends that always will help me out some with hides. The got me all the way through Armorsmith, so I had it pretty easy. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding some nice, helpful hunters that will give you some assistance. You may have to get off that backwater rock you live on and go tomore populated areas like Coronet, Bestine, Anchorhead, and Theed and just hang out and find people to help you, but it won't be too hard to do.

Anyway, I'm sureother's will have different opinions on all this, but this worked very well for me back in the day, so give it a try. Good luck.

Yeah, what he said up there!
Also, the more you increase your Hunting skill through using it, the more hides you'll get.
The things that are only giving meat/bone are probably avian. There are usually more things that give hide than don't, keep searching. And even if you can't get hide, take the meat you can always sell it on the Bazaar and it will help build your Hunting skill.
Definately try to group even if it's with other low-level people.
More people=more/quicker missions=more hides

I'd dump rifles too. Get some good kinetic armor but don't equip it unless the creature actually gets to you. Kite as much as you can and with a good scout blaster you can spam body shot like there's no tomorrow.

My suggestion is a little different. I have similar skills to you, 3/3/2/3 marksman and I am a crafter. I find that the rifle is the easiest way to go, but only if you spend the money to get a good one. Add a powerup and you should be fine. I can take out animals that con red to my normal pistol lvl with a good rifle. Makes it easy to get any hide I need.

My advice is a little different but it really depends on your play style.
