Thread: Surveying on a vehicle!

Wouldn't the endless search to find that honeyhole to place your hvy harvs be so much better ifyou didnt have to get off your **edit** vehicle, hit survey, get back on ride for 4 seconds, get off survey, ride for 4 more seconds!!

Not like we have to worry about accidents or anything, I mean come on. Though doing this tends to piss some people off when they get off their vehicle and they have to either run a LONG ways to the closest city and respawn their vehicle, or build a camp and place it.

Also would help alot when you are looking at the survey screen to keep an eye on the resource density and you happen to run into a den full of reds that will kill you on sight, would help alot if that happens if you could just gun the vehicle and leave um choking in the dust!!

I have a survey device (actually not even necessary) in one hot key slot. Nearby i keep mount and dismount. So to start out i pull out my speeder and have it selected as my target (its important to keep the speeder targeted especially once you get off, you can tab around to check out the mobs as you are mving but if you are gonna get off keep that bike targeted). hit the survey device and choose my resource. Using enter is a quick way to survey instead on clicking on the survey button. So after surveying i just hit ALT which sort of minimizes the survey device window and returns you to mouse look/movement mode. then hotkey: mount, fly to the newly created waypoint, hotkey: dismount, hit ALT to recall the survey device window, press enter to survey at the new location, repeat.

Also once you get going you have a good idea the direction your resource vein is going and you dont have to stop at every waypoint, you can keep on in the same direction.

It's not the mount and dismount that annoys me. I'd just like to eliminate the dismount -> rubberband forward 400m -> rubberband backwards 600m -> run back the 200m to my swoop praying the entire time it doesn't autostore -> hit survey -> re-mount.

If I actually just got off my bike and stood next to it, I could care less about having to dismount to survey.

Before you get on your bike, choose which survey instrument you are going to be using, and have it open with a resource highlighted on it. Then get on your bike. Keep your bike targeted. Use this macro to survey:

/dismount;
/survey;
/mount;

just remember what you sig says, there is no try, only do or do not.

I have only been rubber banded once and it was only about 20 meters. Are you allowing you bike to come to a complete stop before exiting the ride? No seriously, ive heard that jumping off a moving vehicle increases, if not causes, a lot of rubberbanding issues. Now having my bike poof on me is another issue. That happens all the time, usually right next to a large group of red mobs. Needless to say as a crafter i have burst run on the hotkey bar for such emergencies. I also suggest bring 4-6 camps with you, if oyu dont have novice scout, well then you shouldnt be a surveyor cuz we spend a lotta time in the wilderness.

I have heard that if you strafe the vehicle just a nudge after it stops, but before you get off, that it tends to stop it from rubberbanding when you get off.

The few times that I have tried it, it seemed to help.

That macro made my surveying experiences 1000% better. I now find myself to not be content finding 75% veins. One night I spent two FULL hours surveying over two separate planets and actually enjoying all the scenery! Saw two sunsets, collected two badges from just riding through locations, and then low and behold a 98% untouched spot of Duralloy Steel! I have already forgotten the days of running around on foot to do this, but I know I never would have found that 98% spot without the vehicles and the survey macro.

Try implementing the macro before stopping the vehicle. It does a marvelous wheelie around you before coming to a stop. I found that out one night when I was really too tired to be playing, and hit the function key for the macro while still traveling full-tilt.

Oh, and one other thing. If you have any scout skills, so that you can do maskscent, you can set up a second macro so that after you dismount, you implement the maskscent. You can't just do it all the time, because if you have maskscent on, and apply it again, it goes away. So my second macro dismounts, surveys, applies maskscent, and then remounts. And if you really want to be fancy, make a third macro that dismounts, samples, and then remounts. With that one I put in a timer where I tell myself when I can sample again (since you have to wait 20 seconds or so between samples). That way you can sample and look at the stats on the resource. I love macros.

Yes i do have scout, just most of the time my luck is that when i usually encounter those red beasties it is always after i use the camps that i have crafted 8). I was thinking about doing this the other day but I decided to go to bed before I could work out the macro lol. Thanks again.

All very informative, gonna try to make a macro that will help me out with this.

something like this:

/dismount

/survey

/pause 2

/target speeder

/mount
