Thread: Water Water Everywhere, but not a drop to Extract
Get a Water Surveying tool.
Use it. Pick a water, now Survey. See the concentration numbers on the map? Go to the spot with the highest concentration. Survey again. Go to the newer spot with high concentration...etc. etc. etc. Keep repeating this until you find a source of water that is very rich, and easy/safe to get to and sample at.
That's the trick to finding water...no one is going to be able to tell you because it's different for every planet and every server.

So why is it that you can stand in a river and get a 5% water concentration?
Why are you looking for water when you are standing in a river?
Sorry, it was too funny to pass up.

To be honest, I hate the flora & water sampling system. With minerals, gassesand chemical I can buy that you need a special tool to locate these things in weird %s underground. But for wood, plants, water and such, I really feel there should be visual cues.
Approaching a high (50%+) concentration of berries of some kind should display as some extra bushes or denser foliage. Or a small copse of trees where high concentrations of wood are?
How about a small damp spotor outright puddle of water, or even a small spring on a hill? Maybe the rivers already present could yield a high percentage of low-quality water, while you'd have to really survey to find a nice, natural spring high up in the hills somewhere.
Would it be possible to dynamically alter the "just for show" sprouts of grass and such when a concentration of something is in place? Or, conversely, have the percentages of resources be tied to actual geography?
Maybe this is something that could go into the "eventually" column for the devs.
Let's not even get into the idea that I can't just take an axe to a tree if I want wood.
60% outside of Mos Ethna on Bria.
I think there is some sense to the madness. No raresamples in high quantities close to town. Rare samples tend to be relatively far from cities and moderately difficult to get to. For example, nothing over 20% wind that is outside of the no_build area at Mos Ethna on Bria.
I dont think that it would be that hard toprogram an algorythm to place samples of % percentages a minimum distance from key points. At least thats what I would do if I was placing random samples.
In any event, surveying takes a lot of time/skill and shoe leather. If the numbers are slow to move, you probably have a ways to go. If that happens I usually backtrack and go the opposite from the way I started (not really intuitive, I know, but I seem to have better success rates that way.)
I agree we need some visual clues. Icame across a huge NPC building in the middle of nowhere with machinery going. The guy standing next to him showed in his title "a miner". So you would think that this is a visual clue to the rich minerals under your feet, right? Not.
Here's a survey trick I have been using. It's a bit time consuming but I frequently find 80%+ resources. The highest I found yet was 88%.
I pick up a delivery mission that runs between two cities. Sometimes the NPC is alsoin the middle of nowhere near the edge of the map. I then decide on a mineral that I want to survey and start running a straight line towards the mission waypoint, only dodging red blips. If you haveenough mind you can almost continuously ping. I only stop to mark concentrations higher than 25%. After hitting the NPC I run the exact route back and then investigate each 25% concentration waypoint that I find and survey from it until I hit 80%. I try to notsettle for less than 80% but on some gemstone minerals I have not been able to find above 30%.
As I said it take some time but on top of this you get credits for delivery without paying for the shuttle. I now have several waypointswith 80%+ concentrations.
Oh, one more thing this is only worth it when you have Survey III or Survey IV. The increased range really helps a lot.
I KNOW how to survey, It is the pathetic % that show up and do NOT go above 35% even when walking for 1000's of meters.
Heh. Just try surveying for water on Tatooine... =P
