When you create your object, you must be using a specialist tool (in other words, a weapon, droid, general one for GP modules) AND be standing in front of a personal crafting station (or using a crafting droid). You can check you correctly have a schematic by opening your datapad (ctl+d) and it will be right in there with your pets, droids and vehicles

So, when crafting, instead of creating a prototype after plugging in the resources, you will select "Make a Schematic". Then make your way to an EQUIPMENT factory and when you click on it, you won't get the "You don't have a valid schematic" error message. So RIGHT click and hover over the 'Options" menu and it will open out and show you an "Access Schematic Slot" or some such. When you select that, it will show you all the schematics you have in your datapad. Pick your GP one and away you go.

You mention you are new - so I'll pass along a reminder that you must use identical components in the factory. If you create your GP mods using 3 units of Phatboy Steel, you'll need 3000 units of Phatboy Steel in the input hopper of the factory. You can't use 100 units of Phatboy, throw in 2k of Craptastic Steel and 900 of WooBaby Steel. It must match what you used to make the schematic.
