Thread: An idea for all artisans and elite crafters Reverse Engineering
What if it were possible to take something from the game, a typical loot item (lets say a loudspeaker for instance) and toss it into a droid station, let it chew on it for a few minutes, and then come up with a schematic for said item? using the loudspeaker example, lets say that a typical item would give you a schematic for 1-10 of the same item (based on skill and quality of equipment used) but required very specific resources to recreate (for example Skefoic Tatooinian polymer for making the speaker cone, Nabooian XXX desh copper for the coils, etc.) to keep the market from being flooded with stuff, and you couldnt reverse engineer anything player made (including stuff already made by reverse enginering loot).
i think this would be good for architects and armorsmiths (imagine MAKING nightsister or stormtrooper armor) but the chance of failure needs to be kept high to make items retain value. Also, reducing an item to a blueprint should consume the original item (having taken it apart and all).
What do you guys think?
That's actually an awesome idea. What if you had two options though. One to recover the resources (so junk doesn't have to be junk), the other to recover a schimatic? And the schimatic wouldn't be one you could keep either, it would be a factory schimatic, with a limited production number depending on how well you do at it. To keep stuff very rare.
I've heard this idea kicked around a bit. It sounds cool in theory, and I think it could work the way you laid it out. The schematics would need to be very temporary, like 50 uses max on a great success. The only danger I see comes from low skill crafters being able to get schematics for high-end loot drops, like a novice artisan being able to make a factory run of DL44's.

heres the thing about the DL-44 question...
Anyone with a schematic and a factory can produce anything already. I could make composite armor, with zero artisan skills, if I have the schematic and the proper ingredients, and a factory. Thats nothing new. All the skill is in the making of the schematic itself.
This could easily be balanced out, btw, by making the deconstruction of objects class specific (or even making it a master skill/perk). For example only a master artisan can recreate Loudspeakers, etc. Only master armorsmiths can recreate nightsister armor, etc. Cheap weaps like CDEF's and such, which are built by artisans, could be left for Master Artisans. Weaps like Nightsister lances and other high ends require a Master weaponsmith. Its all easily worked out. simply a matter of finding out if its possible in the coding.
