I'm new to the artisan profession, and I thought that I had read long ago that you could get crafting xp on factory runs as long as you were in the vacinity of the factory. Is that correct?

Technically what you read long ago is correct.

However, it stopped being correct long ago as well.

I think it was 5% around release.... nothing to even bother with.
