Dear Manic Miners,
I have seen a fair few posts on different forums about mining macros and so I thought I would share mine with you all. A lot of people are worried about the dreaded drift, accidentally using their re-spec, and stopping if they are incapacitated.
Anyways, I hope this is of some use to someone. Please let me know if I have missed anything.

Macro Issues
These are some of the issues that can be caused by these types of macro.
Drift
This is where you very slowly from the position you started in, and can result in you being placed in the centre of a group of critters, or even worse, into a river or into lava. You cannot sample in water and you certainly cannot sample when you are dead. Drift is caused when you perform certain posture changing actions like entertainer flourishes, standing up and sitting down.
Log Out
There are situations where you will be automatically logged out from the server if you stand still too long without doing anything. Typing at the keyboard does not count as doing anything and can be very annoying if you are in mid-sentence. Log out appears to be prevented, however, by performing posture changing actions and by running a macro, although I have no real evidence of what stops it.
Re-spec Accidents
Some macros use a special UI commands to mimic clicking a button in a pop-up or the tool bar. A lot of people, however, still have the opportunity to use a re-spec which can be accidentally triggered and committed by accident when using these types of macro. Don’t worry, this macro does not use any special UI commands and will not mimic any button clicks, thus will not destroy your re-spec opportunity.
Survey Events
When manually sampling resources, you will sometimes be asked if you want to take advantage of a special survey event. Unfortunately, this question is presented to you in a pop-up that will stop you sampling until you close it. For this reason, my macro will only perform a single sample and then immediately stop sampling to avoid having to close the special survey event pop-up. The downside to this approach is that you can end up with hundreds of unclosed special survey event pop-ups, but I think the extra resources in your inventory more than make up for having to close lots of pop-ups on your return. The other problem with this approach is that you will not yield as many resources as when you leave yourself sampling until your action is drained, unless of course you are interrupted with a special survey event.
Claims and Disclaims
This macro will not log you out if you are AFK.
This macro will not interfere with any other pop-ups, windows or tool bars.
This macro will not make you drift, in fact, you will not move from your spot.
This macro will not stop you sampling if you return from being incapacitated.
This macro will stop if the server is shutdown, or you are slaughtered.

Macro Commands
/sample;
/pause 5;
/stand;
/kneel;
/pause 30;

Creating the Macro
1. Open the command browser by clicking on the "\|/" icon in your quick bar.
2. Click the "macro" button at the top of the command browser pop-up.
3. Click the "new macro" button to open the edit macro pop-up.
4. Type "ManicMiner" into the name box at the top.
5. Select any appropriate icon.
6. Type the macro commands from above into the macro text box.
7. Click the ok button.
8. Drag the newly created macro to an empty tool bar slot.
Using the Macro
1. Pop off to the planet of your choice (I bet it is hot and noisy there).
2. Open your survey tool and survey for your chosen resource.
3. Find a good spot with the highest concentration of resource.
4. Survey the area to make sure there are no roaming critters.
5. Close the survey tool to avoid screen clutter.
6. Click the ManacMiner option in your tool bar (you can also type "/macro ManicMiner" in the chat window to start it)
7. Sit back and watch the pretty graphics (or read a book, or go shopping, do the ironing, clean the house, cook the dinner).
8. Enter "/dump" in the chat window to stop the macro.
How it Works
/sample;
The first line (/sample;) will cause you to start sampling whatever you last selected, surveyed or sampled for using your survey tool. Please make sure you select the right resource as I know all too well what effect it can have when you return.
/pause 5;
The next line (/pause 5;) makes you wait 5 seconds and should give the server enough time to respond to your sample request, perform the action and give you some of the resource (if you are lucky). This value can be modified to a higher or lower number if you have a faster or slower connection to the server. The speed of my computer also seems to effect how much time is needed for the sample to actually be recognised by the server. Anyways, if you can get away with a lower number, you will yield more resources over the time you use the macro.
/stand; and /kneel;
The next two lines (/stand; and /kneel;) will force you to stop sampling and change your posture to the kneeling position. This has two wonderful effects; you will not have to close any special survey event pop-ups, and you will not move from your current spot. When you start to sample a resource, you will be forced into the kneeling position. There is no pause between these two macro commands which means you will magically stand up and then immediately return to the kneel position without actually performing a posture change, thus you will not move.
/pause 30;
Sadly, there is a restriction on the time between samples. When you stop sampling you are forced to wait until server decides you can sample again. This time seems to vary depending on the speed of your connection and, in my case, the speed of the computer. You can play around with this number to see if you can get it faster or slower depending on your computer and connection. You will see a message in the chat window saying you must wait a certain number of seconds before sampling if you have set this number too low.
/macro ManicMiner;
The last line (/macro ManicMiner;) of my macro will cause it to re-run itself, thus it will continue forever, or until the server is shutdown. You can stop the macro running at anytime by typing "/dump" in the chat window or by kicking the black cable that runs into the back of the computer (yes, I did, and no, I won’t do it again).

Good explanation of how to set up and use a macro. Personally, I like the one in the new artisan FAQ better though. Deals with pop-up boxes and drift, and is only a potential danger to those who haven't used their respec yet. There are simple ways around that too though.

Easiest thing to do with the popup windows is ignore them. The will be there till you logoff or if you want to play then just fan the cancel key (they appear under eachother) on each of the 2 stacks till they are gone
You will notice that the macro in this thread takes the path of ignoring the pop-ups

I really wish I had not tried this, but I gave the macro you suggested a go. Unfortunately, that macro continues to run if you die. The macro must have accepted the clone pop-up, and then accepted the re-spec pop-up while I was serving the dinner. I so hate evil critters randomly spawning while I am cooking

The macro listed above with its /stand and /kneel should not have had any effect on the clone popup pr the respec one. Make sure your macro does not have a /ui action defaultButton; command in it as that would create the effect you describe

Sorry Indene, I actually meant that I decided to not use my macro, from the original post, but to try the macro suggested by Dimear to see if the results were higher. I did indeed see a higher rate of sampling, but sadly it cost me my re-spec. One day, I will actually listen to myself rather than foolishly feeding my resource addiction.
Needless to say, I shall be using the quicker macro now that I do not have to worry about the silly re-spec pop-up

This macro is very similar to the one I use. It bypasses the all popup boxes without any issues. You can increase the sample rate a bit by changing the second puase to 27, that gives you an extra sample about ever 5 minutes.

Very nice. Now I won't have to worry about dying every 2 hours because my favorite hotspot for mustafarian steel just so happens to be on an island in the largest body of lava on Mustafar. 92% concentration. Yum!
