I cant afford to master Artisan ( master smuggler + Master SW ). My question is: am I missing anything significant in the master box? Also surveying skill tree what exactly do the bonuses help with on surveying? If I can drop that tree it would help alot, if all it does is reduce the walking time I can do without it. If its critical in some way to harvesters / placing them then ill rethink this.
Thanks!

In my experience, surveying without having at least the 3rd box is like finding a needle in a haystack... you will find it very frustrating in your ShipWright Profession without survey 4... SW has a heavy resource requirement.
But the good news is that I don't think you get any survey bonuses with Master Artisan, so it shouldn't affect surveying if you don't have Master Artisan. MA is very nice to have, especially since you can make vehicles.

Survey tree gives you better range when surveying and more units when you sample.
Master will give you 1-2 extra artisian expiment points for making Pups.
IMO I would go either master artisian or artisian 4-0-3/4-4.
The 3/4 is for a vendor and extre vendor capacity, I suppose you'll need one of those.
Unless you like making the food and clothes in the second tree.

MA doesn't do any thing besides give you shematics

Boils down to personal preference. While you can probably get along without MA, it has the potential to really help.

dont forget you can also use food and skill tapes to increase your range soo you could technically get away with survey 2.. though i think you have to reset your survey tool range while your boosted.. I have not played with this, but it should work in theroy

Whether or not Master Artisan is worth it depends heavily on what you value.
It brings no skill boosts to the table, that is, your artisan skills are maxed out by having 4/4/4/4 Artisan.
The schematics, however, can be quite valuable. You get vehicles, the new ship repair kit, and a whole mess of components used by Droid Engineers and Architects (perhaps Weaponsmiths as well, I forget). The Droid Engineers in particular need tons of Electronics Memory Modules and Electronics GP Modules, as well as control units and micro sensor suites. You can make a decent living on these items.
It's your call. The schematics can be good sellers, especially if you form a relationship with some DE's to supply them with their needed components.
Take care,
Guru

I really wanted Master Artisan, but I ran short of points. They say you can master three professions, but the reality is that you are lucky to master two and be able to dable in a third.

Depends on which ones you're mastering. I'm going to master Artisan, DE, SW, and have enough points for Merchant 3000 and Marksman 2003. The starting professions with their 15 pt novice boxes really eat up the points, but 3 ofmy professions use artisan as their pre-req.

This is true. It is also possible to have two base professions masteredas well asone elite; bounty hunter actually used to require the mastery of both scout and marksman before you could even begin BH. I was a master BH under the old system and still had enough points to have novice medic, novice ranger, and tracking III.
So yes, you can have three professions and still dabble... although with force sensitive powers it's becoming more and more difficult to do.
