Almost every profession would use it as a ferrous metal. There are quite a few different named irons and a lot of weaponsmith schematics that are based on them. In the WS case it might be OQ/Cond for one weapon and SR 100% for another. Shipwright uses it to i believe. Even doctor uses Dolovite Iron and thats OQ/UT for its importance.

The list goes on and on

One way to do it is to go www.swgcraft.com and click on current resources. Put in your server and planet your on. So say im on Bloodfin on Dantooine where my town is.
http://www.swgcraft.com/currentresources.php?server=2&planet=2

Would be the direct link. You go there and see Green Diamond Crystal the stats are ok OQ850 but your harvesters sitting on 98%. So click on "GREEN DIAMOND CRYSTAL" and you will see that its used in advaned weapon scopes. If you want to go deeper you click on "Advanced Weapon Scopes". And you will see that OQ is 100% of what matters in that item. So hey its not bad at all.

But thats going really deep. Now same thing you see that you sitting on 80% Crystalline Gems. Well every chef will want as much of it as you can give since Casks which they use to make their drinks need 150 per (plus an additonal component) and when they are doing runs of 500 casks to make 20 crates of some drink they need 75k of it! No numbers matter on their use of crystal(this is because chef subcomponents dont have experimentation and quality doesnt matter). So if you find OQ1 SR 1 UT 1 Mall 1 ER 2 cystal but your harvesters are sitting on a motherload of it. Contact a chef and see if they would like to place a contract for it. You wont get much 1-3 cpu but its more then it costs to pull it.

Learn the rare materials like new Shipwright Materials or the rare weaponsmith materials like polonium iron and plubum iron. Or looking for a copper or steel with high OQ/Conductivty. Armorsmiths are always looking for steel and Irons with high OQ/SR and sometimes Mallebility.

Resource sales tend to take awhile to get a feel for how the system works or how even to sell it. But ask questions on forums like this. Or read your trade forums to see if someones got a post "Contract for current reactive gas". Which is a trend we are seeing on Bloodfin.

I could go on for pages about how to do this. But i get the feeling Id bore you to tears. So i'll stop here.

Many weapons take Iron. Though many are named, not all are. The stats that are important to us are CD, OQ, SR, and UT depending on what weapon or component we are making.

On all melee weapons its 100% SR just as a reference. Ranged weapons is the ones where it changes

That's very good advice.

I never heard of the swgcraft website, and I always found the resources system very confusing.

Thank you for the info.

I am harvesting Rapa, kammris iron right now UT 1000 on Radiant.

I am selling it for 6.5 - 10 cpu!

I am assuming mostly shipwrights are buying this resource.

No, that is good for WS's too. SR is important for our melee weapons, but UT is the stat for our melee components.

shipwrights need for iron is practically non existant. Iron generally has high tough, and oq depending on the type. good iron for ships is easy to find. though that iron is good stuff As im on radiant, but the 100k i get wil be used on one thing and ill have enough for years : )
