Thread: Apprenticeship, when and when not to charge.

I require a fee when I train people in Artisan skills. This is a set fee. I don't do this to get rich, I lose money when I train people, I do it to help out other artisans. Here's more for why:

When I went to master Artisan I had to beg to train people for free. While I didn't mind trainging people for free, I did mind begging. As a result this has really soured my view of free training. You see, when I was trying to master there were 4 other master artisans in the area who were training people in the very same skills I could have taught. And 2 of them were maxed on apprenticeship. this means that I was competeing to HELP people so I could get my level.

This got me to thinking. What is the cost of training someone versus the return? Well, if you're like me, you have no return experience wise anymore as the max number of apprenticeship points is 1260 1280, anyway I've been at that for 2 weeks. However it does cost me. In the time it takes me to respond to a person, group with them, and train them, I could either have made 1-2k in kill tasks, or I could have made a couple of items that I could sell for the same amount. so training people costs me money, and costs other people possible apprenticeship points. So once I mastered I started requiring payment for my training.

I'm not particulary greedy, I charge 20% of NPC cost, so it's still relatively cheap for the person who is getting trained. However most people think it's their right to get trained for free. And sure it is, but they're going to have to wait for the oppertunity when they find someone who needs the EXP. I find that I have about a 50% taker rate with the price I require, and many people get very upset with me. However I always explain why and almost always they say it makes sense.

So if you're maxed on apprenticeship. CHARGE FOR TRAINING. don't do it for you, do it for that artisan who needs 200 more apprenticeship and is begging to train people.

That's all I ask.

I have the 1240 Apprenticeship XP that I need for my final 2 Professions. From now on I will charge a modest fee because I don't "need the XP".

Jedi will be rare and difficult - No
Increased Dev communication - No
CU will balance combat - No
Most of the bugs from launch fixed - No
saintchuck will continue to pay - No

- I supported the CURB, the Devs and the attempt to make SWG a better game and have realized it didn't work so I'm quitting in less than 2 days and won't be tricked into coming back again. Trick me once, shame on you...

When I reach master...anything I plan to charge a modest fee for training up to that level. As it stands I train for free.

I think as a master though, that I would WANT to somehow limit the number of people I allow into the profession. Of course they will just find someone else to train them, but I would feel silly training my futurecompetiton for free.

I believe you should teach the basic artisan skills (or any basic profession skills) for free. After that, if you teach advanced career skills, you should require, or at least ask for, some compensation. After all, these skills are a LOT more expensive than those of basic careers, so since you spent all that money, and your apprentice didn't, you're getting screwed by allowing him to learn it for free.

I would never charge. If I don't need the axp I just wouldn't respond to training requests.

I've contimplated paying people to let me train them and not someone else.

I think there will always be more people desperate for axp than those wishing training. Unless you happen to be one of the first people to earn the skills.

I don't charge either, i jst accept the tips that are meagerly passed my way!! I have my 1240 as someone else stated and if I am bored of the crafting grind and hear someone express a skill need I will train em but if I am really busy I don't train. Also I don't sport my main title around so people say--OOO he is a MasterMarksman, he can train me!!----- No i proudly display my Novie Medic tag.

My 2 cents worth:

If anyone trains me in something, I'll usually tip them depending on what it is. If its a skill low on the tree, then 100 credits and anything higher goes up from there. Its just courtesy. I've never charged anyone for it, though. However, some people won't tip at all. I don't mind most of the time since I'm getting the Apprentice XP for it, but it would be nice if EVERYONE who gets trained tipped even a little bit just to say Thank You for the trouble you might have tracking them down to train them. If no one offers to train them, then they'll have to go to one of the trainers and pay out the a$$ for it. Its just common courtesy.
