They give me great skill gain for low resources, but is there a point to experimenting on them? They don't have any info that shows whether one pole is better than another when i examine them.

BTW has anyone successfully fished? I sat with my bait forever and i dont understand how the fishing menu works and what to do when i get a nibble or a bite... so confused.

Once I somehow managed to catch a fish. But never again after that. Dont even ask me what I did, I have no idea.

I will tell you what's been successful for me: when the menu pops up you have 'waiting...', 'nibble' and 'bite'. Don't do anything till Bite comes up. I have one hand on the mouse, and one over the enter key. When it Bites, I first choose 'small reel-in', then hit enter, then 'pull up' and 'enter' twice in a row, sometimes 3. At the next menu pop choose then 'pull right' once and enter, then 'pull up' and enter as many times (usually once or twice more) as it takes till you hook the fish. Remember, all this done in a rapid fire, as quick as you can fashion. If it goes back to waiting, repeat process. If it says "Caught Something???" select 'small reel-in' first, and it will start the reeling in process. I always point right at the bobber, in first-person view, until it runs away or takes line, then i turn in the opposite direction, as if steering the fish back. Once it says 'you've successfully turned your fish', straighten back to the bobber, and wait for his next move. You don't have to do anything to reel, just maneuver the rod when he takes more line and tries to run. I think that's about it. Next, sharpen your filet knife and have at 'em.

You know what? First you look for a river where you see fish in the water, logical. You bait your line, you use your pole and you wait until you get a fish. No pull-up, reel-in etc. Easy. Last time with 5 bates I catched 3 fish. And I tough I was not lucky...

I always thought there was no effect. But in the recent posting of issues in development they state that they will show quality stats on items like crafting stations and fishing poles. That certainly indicates that there is.

And thanks for the advice on fishing. I went through like 500 cr of bait (I didn't have forage skill) and didn't catch a thing. They all got away. So I gave up fishing. I guess I should have hired a guide and crafted quality equipment.

a simple question: How do you get bait? What is considered bait?

You get to love this game. they even let you fishing? I remembered I sold a fishing pole, at that time i thought what that person thinking..

Bait can be foraged by a scout, you can also get Chum bait as a by-product when you fillet a fish.

And to the guy that said he caught fish standing there...Do you really think that menu is there for nothing? I guess the blowfish and such are easy to catch, but I'm guessing you won't catch the 'large fish'. And from your post, you fished ONCE.

In case you're wondering, though, I've never caught fish the same way at any spot. Always slight variations on the method I described in detail, which really wasn't that complicated.
