Thread: Simple solution to macro sampling

1. Nerf sampling in town.

2. Sitting still for too long in the wilderness will eventually attract an aggro mob.

I suspect that if more samplebots were shot in the head by sandpeople or trampled by banthas it would effectively address the problem. What would be the point of running the macro if every time you returned to your computer after a few hours you were in the cloning facility with a bunch of wounds and no resources?

Of course I'm also a fan of things like corpse decay and wandering groups of aggro mobs...

A modifier to the function that generates the resource concentrations when they spawn would also be a good idea. Add the distance to the nearest town as a negative factor to reduce concentrations near towns. This would put the really good veins in remote areas which are populated with the really nasty wildlife.

An even better solution is to just QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT IT. There are no problems with macro sampling. So the rate between samples is 26 seconds. Go find a spot with greater than 70% and sample for a while, you'll get the resources needed. As for the rest, well let's see, with properly adjusted stats I can macro sample a 60% spot for 8 hours and typically get a return of 3-4k of materials where with a large harvester I would only get 2.3k and have to spend 1440 credits and 1200 energy for the same time. Until they provide an increase in harvester efficiency, the macro sampling will remain. (oh for all those who scream immersion factor, I did the math my character spends about 2/3 time sampling and 1/3 time resting which is more rest that I personally get. add in that digging by hand is drastically less efficient than using heavy machinery and the whole realism arguement goes right out the window)

Thank You..........I hate it when players use unfair tactics to get over that end up costing other players money at the end.. What happens when bandwidth cost Sony more money then we pay that additional cost, for some buttwipe to leave his comp running while he/she do other task. I would like then to spawn creatures that detects when someone are using such micros for the creatures will chew their bandwidth harversting @ss alive. Youstand still to long yourDEAD!

I don't see anything wrong with macro sampling. I've been using it all morning. It keeps my supplies up, while in the meantime my mouse is moving between two different crafting tools, practicing crafting.

Hey we pay for the game just like you, so don't say we are taking up bandwidth. I think macros are fair, they're more efficient than harvesters, they allow the (let's face it) somewhat boring profession of artisian to be a bit easier, and everyone is doing it so really no one is getting an unfair advantage.

Sometimes I like to post on these forums while I'm sampling, and this makes it a lot easier to do so. I also use it while I practice crafting, it makes much, much easier and more efficient to do so.

Also, entertainers and other professions use macros so let's not take it all out on the artisians.

With the advent of the practice option and easy sampling macros the artisian profession is starting to seem less like a big grind. I think we should worry about the bigger problems in this game and then get to nerfing artisian again.

Thankfully the Devs don't see it like some of you. Holo has posted several times that macro sampling is an abuse of the intent of the game.

Macro sampling can't get nerfed soon enough for me. Too bad that the non-exploiters are gonna get nerfed as well in the process.

I totally agree. Froma game play perspective it doesn't affect me as there are plenty of customers to buy my surplus resources. Unfortunately, too many youngsters don't seem to understand that just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. From a system resource perspective the active clients with no active playerconsume server processor time and memory as well as my bandwidth and cpu when I have to render a fieldof AFK statues.

There's also the issue that the first sample nerfis a pain in my@$$. Not because I was using the sample skill to gather resources butbecause it makes it more difficult for me to sample new materials at low concentrationsto see what their properties are.

The arguement that "I pay for the service just like you so I should be able to do anything I want" gets thrown around here so frequently that I'd be surprised if half of the people on these boards are old enough to drive. The point isn't that you paid for the software, the point is that SWG is an online collaborative environment which by extension has its own ettiquette. Because there are people on the other end of those avatars it means that they should be treated with at least minimal consideration which includes consideration of how ones actions affect the community as a whole.

I'm not going to get into the whole "social contract" thing because, honestly, if you don't already get it you won't for a few years anyway. Then again, considering the amount of spam I get and the general lack of manners among the great unwashed, there is no gurantee that you will get it later in life either. Just try to understand that courtesy and consideration are free of charge and get you much more in life than you might initially think.

Since I've diverged into a rant I'm just going to stop.

Thanks Null, you've shown me your true self.. It's rather sad when someone automatically assumes that when someone does something that they think is wrong their either young or uneducated. Fact is, Null, for whatever reason, has decided that his way of playing the game is the only way. Oh, and he also works for SOE and knows everything about their servers and database software, just so you all know.

Totally gave up Armorcrafting, and took up Rifleman/Doctor.
Yeah.. I have no blue.

Its just an attitude I run into with adolecents alot more than with adults. Its part of the whole inductive logic thing. And I havn't even begun to reveal 'my true self'.

Oh and just to be clear. No I do not work for LucasArts or SOE but I do know quite a bit about server farms, database scaling and networking. I also wrote code for Merc.

Null,

I agree with you. If I had it my way SWG would be for adults only. Children will act like children. Few days ago someone in the game comes up and says "There wasn't any afro's in the real Star Wars" It's hard for me to think that adult would say that to another person. BUT!. Teens and young adults will take every unfair advantage possible to make toon life easier even if it's means costing the community as a whole.

I do it simply so I can sample and then focus on my crafting...before it was annoying...now I can sample and craft at the same time...i have worked out a decent system, but still takes forever to get xp to become a droid eng.

Well a simple fix would be to remove macroing all together...but we may upset not only macro samplers but dancers and medics and brawlers and about every other character.

Macro'ing is there to make it easier...so if I am fighting I can hit up my macro and do a nice combo attack and be done with it. When I am a medic I can click my macro that let's me heal them while I talk to them. Dancers, well we know what they do with it. Musicians...well we know. About every character will use macros, and some will reallyput them to good use. But I think there isn't a problem with it because t does take a lousy profession, that EVERY other player needs to take advantage of, and make it hand's-off enough that they can also craft, or bring in supplies for others... and don't get me started on harvesters after the nerf!!!!

I love all the experts here who keep putting words in the developer's mouth. OK people do an advanced search for macro sample with Holocron as the author and guess what..........only one post and it does NOT have anything in it related to macro sampling being an ABUSE or an EXPLOIT. So give it up. The scare tactics by disgruntled children will only work against children who won't take the time to do a little research. (and by using the term children I mean the mental ones not those strictly by age)
