Thread: Surveying Inside Cities...

...how does this realistically make sense? Think about it for a moment.

What industrial conduit are you tapping into in order to sample that Inert Gas resource? Whose resources, which are being piped throughout the city, are you stealing when you do this? Whose pipes are you ripping out of the infrastructure of the city in order to get that Steel sample?

These questionsare somewhat related to someone's complaints in another postabout resources being routinely found mainly within cities, therefore being unavailable for setting up harvesters. Quite frankly, if you were to ask me, the only resource you should be able to sample without pissing off whatever passes for authorities within the city or whomever "owns" the property you're sampling on, should be Water Vapor, which is, theoretically, gathered from the air around you.

Now, that is a change that I could whole-heartedly support. After all, how hard is it, really, to travel a couple hundred m outside of town to gather samples. It's not significantly dangerous in that area for most cities, and easily as accessible to newbies as well as more experienced players.

Well, realistic issues aside, whoever said that "all the good resource are found within cities" hasn't stepped farther than a few meters out of town, obviously.

All the good resources are OUTSIDE the cities, where it's DANGEROUS. Yes, you half to walk for a little while. Poor baby.

A valid point, with which I will agree (having found some schweet Copper with 800+ qualities in everything about 2k outside of a city, once). However, it's only tangentially related to my posting. It just doesn't make any sense to have people kneeling down, smack in the middle of a city street, taking core samples of resources. Heck, they'd be punching right through the sewage pipes! "Where'd you get this great polymer resource?" "Oh, that? I just tore up a few PVC pipes in the middle of Theed."

I agree with the posts. If you can't setup a camp as a scout inside the city, you shouldn't be able to survey.

I totally agree with you. People shouldn't be able to just sample right in the city. I remember thinking that the first time I sampled for Copper right in the city, I was thinking: "I wonder if I'll get in trouble for this" because I figured the steel I was taking was off of the buildings or something - lol

But what's up with the angry faces man? Does it make you that mad or did your little yellow guy just draw his eyebrows on funny like Uncle Leo and everyone just thinks he's mad?

I'm in total agreement with everyone in this thread. I haven't sampled inside a city since I started the game because 1) I haven't found as high a concentration ofa resourceas Ican outside the town and 2) it just feels wrong. You can't do that in the RW, so why should you be allowed to do it in a city in the game? But, whatever people want to do, they'll do. After all, this is just a game. Maybe the DEVs couldn't set it up to "zone out" the city to where you can't sample inside.

Or they could just make the resources not appear in established cities. Seems like a much easier fix that way...

It really takes a lot of imagining for the resource part of this game to make any kind of sense. Realism does not play any part of it. How realistic is it to pull refined steel out of the ground? Steel is not a mineral, it is made from Iron and Carbon. Then it is processed in many different ways to give certain physical characteristics (e.g. cold rolling, tempering). I think it would interesting to have a Miner profession and add these kinds of processes for all materials to that tree. It would be a lot of work to implement and they prolly didn't want to spend the time and manpower to create this in the game. So, they just allow us to get resources directly from the ground from wherever it is. Realism just doesn't enter into it at all.

Yes, well... Technically speaking, we should have to refine all of the metals that we gather from ores. Even without this, though, sampling inside a city seems a bit...dodgy.

LOL...

First off.. surveying is only lets say temporary... does it both you that much?

Eventually most people will have overcrowding of harvestors..

what's more important is we should be able to buy pieces of land so in the future when everyone has their machines up there isnt kaos.... you'll have to have a tool to find all your machines or something among the clutter...

Surveying inside the city isnt a bad thing.. it doesnt hurt anyone.. I would just lower the resources in the city, which most already are..

you need what 31% of an item to sample it.. and usually I dont get that in the city..

Wayfare is a good example, I'm usually in the cantina but when I leave it always sends me outside the gates.

For the most part I agree with you. I try to do as little sampling as possible in the city. But, if we were to get to realistic about what what should and shouldn't happen in cities then a lot of people would feel the bite. No large creatures in town (already a big petition for this one), Smuggler trainers shouldn't be able to just stand around town with a big label that says "Smuggler Trainier" over their head, and covert Rebels and Imperials shouldn't be able to remain covert if they run around asking where the mission terminal is. These are just a few of the other unrealistic things that happen in game.

Although I have sampled inside of town before, I generally try to keep it to a simple 1 or 2 unit sample to find the resource I'm looking for and then head out to find a place where I can set up harvester. If there was a change made to where people couldn't sample more than a minute or so at time in town then I have no problem with that.

i look at it this way...

if you use the imagination, surveying in a city is like recycling extral materials...or even magnetic prospecting.
