You have to craft the item in front of a weapon, droid, and general item crafting station, and when you're about to make the item, select create draft schematic instead of create prototype. You will then need to put this schematic into an equipment factory (bring up the radial and one of the sub-menus will give you the option to 'access schematic slot.' You need to deposit power and money into the factory and then click start manufacturing items.

Edit: Almost forgot you have to put the resources you used to make the schematic in there too

How in the world do I make crates of an item? I can make powerups, but I see no option anywhere to make them in crates, put them in crates, etc. Is it a factory option?
