Thread: Resource location decay
Know the rate no, but seen it happen yes.
A few spots I commonly sample from have little or no people mining there, and they've stayed exactly where they were when I first started sampling. HOWEVER, I had a usual mining spot close to a city that got a LOT of use. First day there was a 2x2 block of 75% concentration. Now 3 days later of that 2x2 block the highest concentration is 1 square of 74% and the other 3 are at 72%.
It seems to me like there is a set number for a "block" of what would be 100% (say 1 million units). If a block is at 70% it'd be at 700 thousand units. As it was mined it'd drop percentage points as the resource is extracted. Now what happens when it gets to low, or when it cycles out completely is anyones guess being so early on, but sooner or later it'll drop to a point where it isn't as good as other sampling locations, and people will move on.
Another thing to consider is this is just from people SAMPLING. A good check would be to see what happens on harvester land as it's continually pulling up material. I'd imagine the changes would be a lot more visible there. Something for me to check out starting today. As I come up with results I'll post them.

Well I have a chemical harvester and mineral extractor on a 82% piece of land right now (82% for aluminum, 80% for chemical) within a meter of each other
. So I will let them run for a week or so and report back my findings.
Oh most definitely. In researching this, finding a ridge that there's always people mining on is a good way to determine effect.
Harvester research is more along the lines of rate, as they extract at a constant rate instead of the hit or miss of sampling. Watching that could give us an idea of total "block" size, and be able to determine how long a given patch will last for.
Of course if they're running variable "block" sizes that's another monkey we'll have to deal with.

It's going to take quite a while to burn out resources in one area.
My advice, don't go to those "sweet spots" near town. Go out, explore. If you notice, the 5 starting planets are quite easy to run around and explore in.
For now, that you have no Harvesters, start surveying heavily places far away from town where you CAN build harvesters, so that later, when you CAN build your harvesters, you know exactly where to go. Once you find a good spot without many people around where you can build stuff, just make a waypoint so you can go back to it.
Those "sweet spots" you guys are talking about aren't going to net you the resources you'll need to level up into anything serious.
