How does this work? I don't seem to have a survey device for bone or hide. Do I need to harvest corpses (Eww)?

you have to pick up novice scout and then you can harvest bone and hide from dead critters

If killing skinng and boning animals doesn't sound fun to you, get a scout friend to get the stuff for you, or buy it at the bazaar (though the bazaar price is high IMO, so I jsut go and do the dirty work myself 
)

Nah, I don't have a problem with it. I guess if Han Solo can do it on the frozen wasteland of hoth, then so can I!

Yes get scout it's useful. The leftmost branch helps a lot with camouflage and mask scent. This can get you to some sweet mining spots without getting mauled by the local wildlife.
