Thread: Starting a resource mining corperation?
You'll have a lot of peeps offer to 'rent' you their lots...meaning that you provide the harvesters, then when the resources shift, you go find a new spot, you find them, hope they're not too busy, drag them across half the galaxy to pick up the harvys from the old loc and take 'em to the new one - then do it all again in a week. All the while paying them rent.
Take a hint from Nancy Reagan and Just Say No.
We have an insanely successful business running just the sort of operation you've described. I offer my partners guaranteed sales of all that they can provide me, and I buy from them at 90% of my selling price. I role is to stay on top of the resources shifts, coordinate the survey for the new locations (of about 2 dozen of us, only 4-5 actually have survey IV), and keep everybody notified by e-mail. Anyone that wants to be a part of it can go buy her own harvys, and be responsible for paying maintenance and re-deeding as necessary.
The hardest part is the knife-edge balance between supply and demand. Set your price too low, and you'll be slammed with tells offering to meet you and buy it all right NOW before a single unit ever gets to the vendor. Set your price just a little too high, and your suppliers will be offering and offering and offering while your sales lag. Next thing you know you've got 15 million units on your vendor. (I've personally been on both sides of this dilemna.)
Fast forward to today, I'm making good money. I'm not just selling to him but to other people as well. I have about 4 times as much money has he does. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with him spending money to grind through tailor, but it's pretty obvious that there's more money in selling resources then in finished products.
I think architect is especially bad because nothing decays. So, he's thinking about dropping architect and becoming a miner like myself. More money, less work, less skill points use, I can't blame him. I have another friend that's interested in working for us. He's a combat type but he wouldn't mind earning extra money from harvesting. We'd send him waypoints, he manages his own harvs and we'll buy what he sells for 2-3 cpu pending quality.
We'll have a bit of an advantage to start out because my partner and I both have survey 4, he has merchant, and as an architect he can make a fleet of harvs for us to use in our business. I'm good surveyer and I keep meticulous notes on the resources spawns on our server. This time I'm the one with a lot of vendure capitol, and between us we have a lot of resources to start out with.
So does anyone here have any experience with forming a mining corperation? How should it work, what are the best practices and what are the pitfalls to avoid?

If you like we can talk about going into business together, I run outta the bestine area.
