Hmmm weird...What is your range on the (Mineral?) surveydevice set for? Click on it in inventory go to tool options (4) to check.

What are the exact error messages you get when you try to survey?

Stupid question but, did you acquire the skill of Novice Artisan from an NPC Artisan trainer?

One more thing (damn i really wish I could edit posts).. I vaugely remember the survey tool not being set to any range when i first used it... if that's the case with yours you should set it to 64m (probably the only option). Hold mouse over tool options (4) on the radial menu a submenu "Set Range" should show up after a few seconds.

Hi tz84com.

I assume you have chosen the artisan character at the "spaceship". In such a case it is just bad luck that you have had. Try to move to another city or just into the wilderness (but watch out for red dots) and survey for raw materials (preferably copper) untill you hit above 50%, preferably above 70 concentration on your minerals radar and survey. Then make wind survey device untill you reach master.

tz84, if you are just surveying, you will not receive any xp. The only time you get surveying xp points is for sampling. Survey until you find at least a 50% spot, and try sampling there. You should see some experience points being gained, with each successful sample.

Don't let the negative AFKophobes get you down. Play the game however you want.

Is the beta testing almost over for this game?

I made a typing mistake in the above. The second lastsentence should read; Try to move to another city or just into the wilderness (but watch out for red dots) and survey for raw materials (preferably copper) untill you hit above 50%, preferably above 70 concentration on your minerals radar, and sample (instead of survey).

Anyway, I personally have experienced that wind survey devices are the most easy togrind to make you to master Artisan because they only requirethe same material. Also I have noticed when you use high conductivity material (such as copper) the gained XP will be much greater. Inseveral instances when I made wind survey devices withhigh conductivity materials(and I was already engineer 3) I gained above 100 xpper wind survey device.

It says you lack the skill, if the resource concentration is too low (I'm guessing 20%). You have to follow the resource to around 50% or more. The higher the resource concentration, the faster you will get surveying xp (by sampling).

Also, sometimes when a mineral first appears, on day 1 you can't sample it at all - it gives you an error message about resource density. Pain in the butt. Just survey around where you are until you find something, chemical or mineral, that is in a decent concentration, and have at it. You may want to do your survey/sampling xp in a town so you don't get bitten by something wretched.

I wondered if I was doing something wrong. I was sampling materials (got 18 chem and 5 steel), it said I was getting survey exp (around 39 per item), yet I was receiving no exp on my skill tree. Anyone have any ideas?

Sometimes if you logout and log back in, the server catches up with your missing xp. This happens in many professins.

She's right... It's a kick in the head to understand that surveying experience is gathered by sampling.

Best suggetion is to run / drive from waypoint to waypoint and survey until you hit some decent (70%)mineral or chemical. The sample your heart out. Pick a mineral that you can use in the future like copper.

Come to think of it try survey / sampling in the safety of your city and you may surprise yourself with a reasonable concentration of a good resource.

I had this problem too but found LOGGING OUT and LOGGING IN again solved the problem and my XP caught up every time.
