I am sorry if this subject was brought up before, but I couldn't find much on it.
I remember being really excited about artisan when galaxies was first being announced because there was going to be smelting of materials. This was something I am really interested in RL. So to have that in a game would be unique and fun. I don't know why they took it out of the original concept ideas, but it needs to be put back in.
If there was a good smelting mini-game put in I think it could make unique items so everyone would not be running around with the exact same T-21 or something. And, um last time I checked steel is not pulled from the ground, it is an alloy, and a hard to make one at that. So if they had something along the line of a blast furnace, built by an architect, that a Smelter could use to make new alloys better than the ones mined out of the ground would be great. You could keep the furnace at a certain temp, over a certain period time to producea superior alloy depending on what materials you used.
Maybe they could add it to miner if that is ever put in. I would like to hear what you guys think on the subject of a smelter tree or proff.
I am sorry if this subject was brought up before, but I couldn't find much on it.

I think the idea of refiniries/smelters would be awesome. Allow people to take resources and attempt to refine them to increase one or two stats, at the expense of another. Combine mutliple materials into one new alloy.....
I hope something like this happens some day, but I would not hold my breath.

/agreed. Now if we could do that with meat and flora too. hehe. Really, though... I usually only need 2 to 3 stats. An ability to improve those two and kicking the rest would make my crafting headaches go away partially.

Won't ever happen, due to the database mechanics.
Every resource has a name, and every single unit of that resource with that name has exactly the same stats. That was if you are storing a quantity of the resource all it has to store is that you have x units of resource y. No stats need to be stored, because those stats are fixed. Allowing you to modify stats (via any means) would require every unit of resources to store the full stats of it, adding at least ten fields to the item database and slowing the system down even further.
Also, when combing stacks of resources all that is compared is the resource name. Allowing modification of the resource stats would require every stat of the two resources to be combined to be compared, slowing things down again.
