I have a good spot to harvest gems, but I have no idea why I would want to. Would they sell, and what are they used for?

Gemstones can be used for a number of things. They are raw materials for crafting, essentially.

They can be used as a general mineral ingredient, or more specifically for jewelry and such.

Try finding some high-level tailors (for jewelry) or weaponsmiths (some upper-level blasters/rifles need gemstones). You could probably get 3-4 creds per unit, or barter for clothes/weapons.

Or you could just put them up at the bazaar. I haven't seen any schematics that need more than 5-10 gemstones, though, so you'd probably want to sell in small lots.

They are used in some electrical components.
