It's not surveying, but sampling that gives you the XP. Find a very high concentration (80+, 90 if you can) in a safe area, and start a sample macro:

/stand; /sample; /pause 3; /sit; /pause 35; /ui action toolbarSlot##;

Make sure to drag the macro to the toolbar slot number you put in the macro.

Then craft, chat, watch TV,etc. If your ethics permit, leave it overnight.

It really doesn't take that long. It was certainly the first line that I filled on my way to master artisan.

I did the other 3 lines in artisan in 40 mins...

If only you had had this sample macro going while you spent 40 minutes crafting

Here's the clue. Sit in a camp and grind the other trees while you are sampling. It's that simple. If you save it for last, yes it will take some time. The good news is that if you've already qualified for an Elite crafting profession you can grind trees in that profession while you survey.

/forage gives survey xp
