Thread: You use the 250 skill points, and then...?

I am aways from getting there yet, but I'm debating between quitting SWG and returning to EQ, or sticking with SWG.

One thing that is really nagging me, is what is there to do after to use up the 250 skill points, and are happy with the mix you have created? If I become a master artisan, master WS and master AS, I would have a few points to spend in fighting skills, or scouting or whatever.

How can I develope my character any further? Exp is worthless at that point. Money would presumably not be a problem, and what would you spend it on anyway? Everything is player made.

What is there to challenge me, especially if you are not interested in PVP? I can easily see where I would be max skill long before the expansion would come out.

Am I wasting my time? Is Artisan (or really SWG) a dead end game? One of those games where you go as far as you can, and can continue to play indefinitly, but have accomplised all there is to do.

i've been thinking about this too because i'm down to 31 skill points. i've got a few things i can surrender but i'll only get about 10 pts back from that. i've cross trained so much that i'll never be an elite in any one thing but i'm pretty good at a lot of different things. i guess once i'm out of skill points, i'll just roam the galaxy. no more worrying about leveling up, just go with what i got. might be better actually.

Three words: Galactic Civil War. Join a side and make life tough for the other one. That is part of what is missing, so far, in the game. Due, primarily, to everyone focusing on professional development, the GCW has been lost. One good way to always keep demand high is...blow up the stuff you made before.

You're right, professional development isa capped. Not too many have capped out, yet, but it is there. Work, work, work for tomorrow you may...find out you can't go any further. (Probably the ONLY area in which SWG actually does imitate RL!)

Seriously, though, gaining faction points, rank and faction perks has some merit to keeping the game interesting for the long-term.

I guess you are just going to face the fact that you can't be the UberCreature and max out in everything. Be thankful that you're allowed to surrender skills to study other things. Heck in a lot of role-playing games if you get to the top of the class and decide it isn't really what you wanted you have to start over from scratch. SWG let's you surrender skills and dynamically change your stats. So, you can either be a jack-of-all-trades, or master one or two professions... but you won't be able to master everything andmeet up withVader or the Emperor and killing them by power flicking them with your little finger.

I cannot say what *you* should do as I don't know what you enjoy doing in game. I am going to try and go through some theme parks, all the dungeons (not really applicable for a artistan), try to get as many badges as possible, get a house, get a bigger house, hope to unlock my FS slot and go for a jedi... I expect that will take me quite a while and hopefully by then they will have released the Space Expansion and maybe opened up some new planets.

The devs have said that they feel the game really starts once you do use up all your skill points. Once all the bugs begin to get fixed they will be adding more high-level content for all playing styles. I don't know if I'm going to enjoy SWG as much once I've got my character set up the way I want; I do have enough faith in the developers to try it out though.

Well if you can't be happy with the commercial empire you'll have built by that time, and crafting superior goods to sell people isn't giving you satisfaction...start another character on another server and build it up in a different profession!

To me .. there isn't an end game.. and why should there be?

There is no maxxed out character... even if you hit 250 .. you still can change.. you still can evolve.. you still can be something.

The problem with most people is they are stuck on the "I have to get to the end.. to have fun" ideal that is forced upon us by many games. EQ and DAOC are both glaring examples of this. In DAOC, RvR was high end game.. at least before the mini battle field areas were in.. and if you really wanted to do some real RvR.. and go over and take over someone elses land.. you had to be 45+ and bring a group. In EQ, there were areas you couldn't even get to unless you were high.. which just stank for most people.

This game is not about winning. it isn't about having that maxxed out character.. and being better then someone else. It is about society.. and creating your goals. Just as in life.. this game allows you to control the goals placed on it. If my goal in life is to make it home safe every day to be with my hubby.. and i suceed... then i have won. If my goal in game is to run from one side of a planet to the other.. without being incapped.. and i do it.. then i have suceeded and I have won.

The problem is that this game mimics life alot.. and people dont seem to be willing to accept it. When they say "live in a star wars universe" they mean it. There are no goals set out for you in the world.. you make it what you want. That is exactly the same for this game.

Grinding and forcing your way to the "end".. and not enjoying it.. is basically the same thing as working yourself to the bone.. every day.. and never stopping to enjoy the little things or enjoy your accomplishments, then dying never reallyliving life.

Perhaps that is how you want to live your life.. but I know it is not how i want to live mine.

One thing to consider is that by the time you max out your 250 skill points, there will almost certainly be new skill trees to advance in. This game is not even close to being complete yet, there are still professions that we don't know about that the devs are either developing now, or have developed and are waiting for folks to get to a point where they need something new to do.

BUT, the most important skill you will have to find in this game, to make sure you will play it for a long time, is your people skill. Building relationships and getting involved in the drama that is the GCW or even the Universe as a whole is key. I know lots of artisans that can build lots of stuff, but I only buy from folks that I've built up a relationship with, that I can sit and tell stories with, etc.

Just my 2 credits...
