Thread: My thoughts on the Devs considering a 'Miner' profession
I would 100% say a Miner is arequired profession for a few reasons.
1. Artisans, Weaponsmiths and Crafters of all kinds should really be sticking to making things, I dont think Surveying should be blended in with the creative professions. Resources are a key part of the game and to just have their extraction tagged onto Artisan is a little slap-dash.
2. Before I developed my Artisan skills I stuck to Marksman/Scout and I could make easy, easy money by sticking a couple of harvesters down and mining some rich vein of resources (located by seeing where other people had placed their harvesters) to sell on Bazaar. Shouldn't this be restricted to a specific profession? As it is, anyone can gain a large, steady income from Resources whether they are an Entertainer or a Bounty Hunter and this doesn't require any skill. I would like certification for placing Harvesters (and Factories for that matter)to be used.
Thanks for bringing this up in here Jandrew. It took me a few minutes to find these boards lol.
We've got those two version of Miner up in skill tree format on SWGX (www.nexusstorm.com)
If SWG truly is a 'skills' based game then they need to look at including Miner and Farmer et cetera back into the game.
I dont see alot of room for a full Miner profession tree unless you take away from Artisan and Architect in the process.
You could, for example) move the Artisan harvesters (and generators?)from Engineering II& IV to Surveying (which is presumably what Miner would come from) III & IV and take the harvesters from Architect and move them into Miner - however that then brings up the question of what you give back to the Architect and Engineer III & IV?
Other than that I can only think of more efficient surveying (bigger range, higher yield) but would that be enough to fill out a full elite profession tree?
Maybe Miners could get a planet wide resource scan with detailed stats....maybe a system which automatically sends resources to peoples factories...perhaps they could get extra lots...mayberent out sections of land (nice big money sink for the peeps with millions of credits) so that they could keep resources to themselves making for some nice competition in the resource hunting area.
Initially I agreed, that there isn't enough for an Elite Profession, but theres plenty of things to add and bonuses to give if you have a think.
Perhaps Artisans and Architechts could keep the harvesters, Miners could make them too, but with the ability to make them better than Architechts (Harvester Crafting XP?) and Miners would be the ONLY profession with the ability to place and operate the harvesters. Like I said, it seems dumb that an Entertainer can make a side line in Mining to fill his pockets.
Not everything could be tested and not all problems could have been taken into account for when beta ended, but I really think that this would have had a MUCH larger chance of happening in beta.

In beta I was very vocally againt adding back in the miner profession but now a month after we have gone live I agree that is is needed. The few people that chose to sell resources now can not keep up with the demand and there are many crafters who take care of harvesters who would rather not have to.
My main concern with a decidated miner class was that prices would be very unfair to crafters but with a few exceptions I have not seen this as a problem.
It might not be as big of a code change as it might appear. Miner and Farmer were in beta (before I was) and removed. Presumably, at least somethe architect harvesters and such were given to them from the miner tree.
It might just be a matter of putting them back the way they were. I'm not really sure why they took them out in the first place, it might have just been lack of demand in the beta population. Now that there is a wider market, it may be that they have a place again.
I spent the first few weeks tending to my harvesters and building up a cushion of resources. That wasn't really all that muchfun. For the amount of money I put into maintenance, I probably could have bought just as much from a miner, gotten more crafting xp, and been a lot happier in the process.
