Thread: Creature habitats.
Ok, im confused here. What is the point of creature habitats?
For those of you who dont have a clue what im talking about, go up to a creature lair and let the radial menu fully load. You will find an option for take sample (or something along the same lines). What happens is you will find a jar of something in your inventory. What I got the 1 time I did it was a "sample of live bees."
After some research i come to find out that a master artisan can take this sample and create a "creature habitat" where the bees live inside. So naturally im thinking that this is some sort of an aquarium type thing that might make some kind of a cool display in my house or my PA hall. I then head on out to my local master artisans house to see what he can do for me.
I give this guy the bees and he makes me this habitat. Unfortunately when its finished it looks exactly like one of those white containers you buy from an architect that you really cant store stuff in, you know, the ones that look like trash cans? LMFAO, what is the point of this? It doesnt do anything. The only radial menu options you get when you select it are examine, drop and release which of course releases them into the wild. I was hoping for some kind of an aquarium thing or something that I could put on display, but nope, i may as well just buy a trashcan and name it creature habitat cuz its the same thing.
As a further teaser here, I left the guys house outside of kadaara when I started writing this post. I alt + tabbed back into the game right now to make sure i wasnt stuck on a building or something and low and behold, the creature habitat/trashcan is now missing from my inventory. Now, on examining the thing before it said that this habitat could hold the bees alive for an extended period of time. So after going through all of this trouble did my useless bees just die after 5 mins? LMFAO, im really confused here as to what the point of this thing is. Is this just some kind of a wild goose chase put in by the devs so they can get a good laugh at the hapless explorers in this game? Frankly, the jar that contained the bees in my inventory was cooler looking than the end product is, maybe ill collect those. LOL.
In any case, this is kind of a neat idea if it actually served a purpose. Ive heard about aquariums of some sort in this game, dont know what they are or how they work but ive heard of them. I think this feature needs some work and someone around here who knows who the artisan correspondent is should mention this to him. Im not an artisan so i dont have the slightest clue. But if they made these habitat things look like some sort of a fish tank or aquarium that could be put on display in a building, that would be great and give them a neat little purpose. Oh, and make sure they dont die after 5 mins anymore either.

It disappears when you release the animals.
They are like butterflies or gnats, when you release them they fly around your head for a couple seconds, then vanish, and the habitat is gone.
That's all.
Disappointing how? They weren't in the game, just sort of added as a little surprise...granted they're nothing special, but it's not like they are intended to kill ATSTs or anything...so there's no reason to find them disappointing.
In the future they may come up with something that uses the creature lair in a more practical way. It seems like they had plans for it or something....I don't know why I say that though.
Whats the point of fireworks?
Think of creature habitats as fireworks and you'll be ok.
A couple of days back I was watching a particularly good entertainer releasing these in the cantina as part of there act, very cool.
Its roleplaying fluff
intended to add to the enviroment but not impact the game in any major way. I personally think we need more items like Fireworks and Habitats. There is an endless supply of ideas for more fluff that would be easy to add in because it does not really need any balancing beacuse it does not impact game play.
Firstly, it doesn't have to be a Master Artisan, most with a bit of Engineering can do it.
Secondly, as far as I can see, while it requires resourses to create (metal and chemical, as well as the jar of 'live' creatures) it always has 0% sucess, and gives no XP.
Fireworks give xp. I'm not asking for so much as to make it a 'grind-attractive' object - just to offset the 'effort' cost of the resourses. How many artisans are in the habit of running up to creature lairs and rummaging around up to their elbows?
And I certainly think that someone, somewhere has plans for Creature Habitats. The description hints at an Architect use. However, I also think that just as someone somewhere once had plans for fireworks, the fruition of the Creature Habitat train of thought could take years - it's not exactly high priority.
What would be cool is if you could trigger them to release when someone comes into your house / shop. Not useful, but cool. Along the lines of an entertainer releasing them as part of their act or a vendor speaking a welcome message.
