Thread: I'm new and need a helping hand...
I'm pretty new to the game....and well i've not really got a clue what to do.
I'd like to get into making items, so i guess an artisan is the way to go...but which race is the best one to choose.
Can any one point me in the direction of some guides for the artisan.
I started one char, and i had like 3 different guns in my inventory, do i really need all those?
Or as a new player would i be best going into fighting or some thing else.
Regards.
combat is not required as an artisan.,and Humans have the most artisan bonuses.
you can have 3 master professions and two tiers of anything else.
With combat, you can level up and get used to the game while making easy money from missions in groups. You can also start selling creature organics to other crafters until you have enough creds to get set up.
It also costs alot of money to get enough resources to level a crafting prof, so beware! I remember back in the day I started out trying droid engineer. When I saw that i needed over 1mil of resources to grind it out I quickly went for combat instead
Like the previous poster said, human is going to be the best choice for Artisan due to race bonuses they receive. If you decide to become an Artisan and want to make foods and powerups (both can be quite useful) those bonuses are going to become very handy. And humans are decent enough at the other crafting professions. The assembly bonuses some other races have for the Elite level crafting professions aren't bad, but they're not something you should worry about if you don't have them.
You asked what would be best as a new player, combat or crafting. Gaining skills as a combat player are a lot easier right now, if you're in a group. If you joina group of higher level combat players its usually laughably easy to get the xp you need to level-up. Now you get full xp for each creature your group has killed so long as you've done ANY damage to it at all (well, if you're healing in the middle of it, the xp will be split between medical xp and your weapons/combat xp). So in an hour's time in a good group you should be up to lvl 12 or 14 and will be getting the Novice Box of your chosen Elite combat profession. Just keep that up and you'll be at level 80 soon enough (or so it seems to me, since it took me about 5 months of part-time playing to Master two advanced professions when I started). And the while time you're in those grinding groups, you should be making a little bit of money each time...enough to keep upgrading your weapons and such semi-regularly. So anyway, combat is the quickest way to go if you want to advance as quickly as you can.
As a crafter, there's no real quick and easy way. If/when you grind out the survey line of Artisan you just have to find a spot with a high % concentration of something and sample the hell out of it. That would be a good time to start a novel. For the other 3 lines of Artisan, you have to craft stuff. But as a new player you won't have the resources to craft much. If you do Surveying first, you should have a decent supply of resources to get you part of the way through the crafting branches. Just start making whatever you can (in practice mode) with whatever you have. You can supplement this by taking Artisan Crafting/Delivery missions from an Artisan mission terminal. You'll be directed to an NPC somewhere nearby who will give you 3 parts and the schematic to make...whatever it is. You use your generic crafting tool (there should be a 'mission' catagory where you'll find that schematic). Just plug the 3 parts into it and craft it (you'll still get a bit more xp if you do it in practice mode, though you won't be able to complete the mission and get the payout, if that matters to you). You'll get xp without using any of your own resources. Then you'll be directed to another NPC who will give you the money. If the mission payout is near 100 credits, the 2nd NPC will be in the town you're already at. If its 1000 or so, it'll be in a different town. When I started, I did these missions from Moenia on Naboo with the deliveries in...ehhh...I can't think of the nearby NPC town (to the North), but all of the 1k+ missions ended there. With two missions of 1k+ each to the same general destination, I made a fair number of credits, but it was very tedious. But it pays the bills and gets you xp. Once you get to Engineering III you should be able to produce the personal harvesters. These require a lot of resources, but will get you a lot of xp in return. So if you've saved some money you might be able to buy the resources...or at least buy pre-built harvesters (better ones than what you can produce) and some energy to run them. Drop them on a good spot, and let them collect the resources for you and then just start crafting, crafting, crafting. It'll go quickly from there (comparitively speaking).
Until you can produce reasonably high quality goods, it'll be hard to sell much. If you are willing to put in a lot of time and effort, crafting can be very rewarding financially, and (in my opinion)is the one thing that really sets SWG apart from the other MMORPGs (other than the Star Wars setting, of course). I've had a lot of fun trying to make the best power hammers (one of the more challenging weapons to produce...or so I think. Trying to get the most out of my resources and components has kept me interested in Weaponsmithing for weeks now. And did I mention rewarding?I recently sold two extremely nice Power Hammers for a combined 17.5 million credits.
Sorry to ramble on....I guess I'll try to get some sleep now. Anyway, good luck in whatever you decide to do. And if you happen to be on the Valcyn server (or decide to create a toon there), look me up. I can usually find work (either some surveying, harvesting, or placing some harvestors) for even the newest character.
HA! My answer was longer (and more rambling) than yours, Kaati....I win!
Oh man....I need some sleep.
Personally, I would recommend picking up either marksman or brawler (probably not both), and medic. And maybe novice scout, so that you can harvest resources from the animals you kill, then sell those resources. Soon, you'll be strong enough to handle yourself on your own pretty well, and you'll be making enough credits to support your new artisan vices.
As for the guns you have, they're really for a marksman. If you're a brawler, you don't need guns.
I'm on one of the european servers....is was one that said recommended.
I'm looking into crafting weapson and armor/clothes. I've started a human class character on tatoine(spelling?).
I've been doing a few kill missions to get my marksman skill up a bit, whilst harvesting bone/skin/meat from the animals.
I've not really had any tutorials about doing my skills, apart from being told to go to the entertainer and doing some dacing or play some music...although nothing seems to happen when I dance.
Regards.
To begin, talk to Mayor Mikdanyell Guh'rantt at 3436, -4720 in Mos Eisley on Tatooine. He'll say something about helping you figure out your skills. Choose the profession you want to learn more about (you should have at least novice in whatever you choose), and he'll send you on some quests related to that profession.
