Why is it when surveying and rich vein is hit and you get the same ammount of ore, but less XP? I'm only at survey I, so I'm assuming you get a big bunch at higher levels and about the same XP or something?

You dont get much more at higher levels of surveying. But don't worry you hit survey IV pretty quickly. I think the most experience I have seen is 39 exp points, and the most I harvested at once was 10? If I remember correctly.

I don't know for sure but as far as I can tell, the amount of survey XP you get per successful sample is pretty random - eg. sometimes you'll successfully sample 10 units and get maybe 20 XP, then you'll sample only 4 units and get 37 XP, etc.

The "rich vein" code has always been broken since its inception, as far as any of us can tell. There are supposed to be other "critical success" events while surveying as well, but none of them work. No idea when these will be fixed, but they probably won't be touched until the miner class comes out, which will apparently be some months down the road.

Well, having gotten through survey 4, here's what I've seen.
On a normal hit, you get between 25 and 40 exp. Roughly these tend to add up to about 100xp for every 3 hits. When you hit the 'rich vein' you get less exp, usually around 20exp.
I rationalize this as you're being lucky instead of good. It's a tradeoff; more material, but less exp. Sort of a self balancing act.

What's happening is you're getting a sort of "critical sample." It takes the amount you would have gotten and increases it by some other amount, but you get the exp for the original amount.
