I looted an ancient asteroid while out space mining. The description says it could be used by an artisan, which I am not. Anyone have a clue what it might be for?

there used in some of the decorative items now. ie strakes etc... for some of the ships. There are several other specifc asteroid chunks like that one, they're not particularly common so no idea what the value is on them, but there is no benefit to the items they are used in, they are merely for looks.

It's part of one of the new texture kit for ships. check out the shipwright forums. There is a list of what each looted asteroid chunk goes into which ship.
