There's one thing I can't figure out.

How the hell do you make money in the game? I have 7 credits, and no one will buy anything. So what's the trick to that?

try picking up some missions. especially delivery missions, if you're an artisan. however, i haven't really needed money yet - you've got all the tools you need to get out and survey right off the bat, which will allow you to advance up the survey ladder. and you can use what you survey to build stuff, which will get you crafting xp to move up the other artisan ladders.

It's early in the game for me, but I just run delivery missions. Looking at mission details will tell you the destination. Experiment a little and figure out which destinations are in a city you can access through a shuttle. Grab 2 missions in that city that pay well, put down 110 for a shuttle ride and go to that city to deliver. You should be making at least 1000 each run.
