I plan to be a Marksman-Artisan/Weaponsmith. Would it be better to start as an Artisan? Or does it make a difference?

probably better to start as artisan. that way you get a crafting tool and some survey tools, as well as a pistol. you can make other (CDEF) weapons pretty quickly.
