I've made a few and I have no idea what they are used for....just for fun? or do they have a side effect?

They're just for fun.

Just like making a chance-cube. No real purpose, other than needing low-level items for Artisans to craft.

I heard there was quite a nice 4th of July Fireworks show on Tatooine/Bria. I missed it, I was partying in Mexico.....

I think just for fun, but wouldn't it be great to use them in combat? Or even as a trap?

You can use them for fun, but another use I've figured out to use them for is a signal flare. It probably isn't all that useful, since you've got private chat channels and coordinates on a map, but sometimes a visual aid will help you find a location better.
