Just heard about an interplanetary servey droid. Would someone tell me what it does and how I would be able to get my lil paws on one?

Well, you can buy one from a droid engineer.
Basically, they work similar to the BH seeker droids. They come with a particular number of charges that get used up as you do the surveys. Each charge requires supplying a survey tool of what you want it to look for (mineral, gas, water, flora, etc), then you give it a planet to check.
After a certain period of time (which depends on the quality of the droid), you get back an email listing the names of all the resources of the type related to the survey tool you gave it. It does not give waypoints to concentrations or resource stats.
I used to find these handy for checking whether a particular resource had shifted out when I'd drop a harvester on one of the more expensive planets to travel to (Yavin andEndor, mainly). But with JTL and free travel, that's not such a big deal anymore. It's quicker and cheaper just to hop over to the planet and check my survey tool.

I dont know how you can say that its quicker to jump a ship.. last time i checked it takes a good 20-30-40 mins to hit all the planets then you need to chart the stuffor make notes which is gonnatake a while even if your just looking for one thing its gonna take you 20 mins..open up all your tools and check resources.. .. to me survey drones are instant aka.. 2 mins to launch um.. do what ever then spend 5 mins checking emails.. you have every thing on a list
These things are invaulable, even if its just for the fancy emails they send, they are much more reliable than swgcraft.. Luanch a group ever day or every other day and you will never ever miss a reasource.. or spend 4-5 hours a week doing the same thing you could have done in about 20 minstotal for the week.(thats just tracking, It will cut your planet hopes by 1/3 - 1/2 atleast..
When you see something new or interesting you hop your ship, check it and grab a wp... You dont have to take my adivce though.. only been a miner since launch : )
ohh btw, these things are cake to make a couple master artisan parts and some extruive, carb steel and some gems..quality reallyisntthat important. Just get some half way decnet stuff and your good to go. and as an aritsan you can make your own crates of survey tools.. Soo make nice with a DE and toss him some reasources or something and im sure you can get an endless supply of these things.. these things save me 4 hours a week atleast.. that in it self is worth 15k a weekthat it would cost you if you had to pay average full retail that is dirt cheap.. thats about 5 days of surveying on all 10 planets.. 3k a day ! ! soo not expensive..thats not even the repair bill on your speeder you forgot to store when ya hit the cantina..

Well, I was only using them to check whether the resources under my harvs had shifted out. If you're actually in the resource collection business, I can see how they may be more useful.

when are they gonna make a survey droid that gives back waypoints?
i burnt myself out surveying for radioactive power for one of the largest power companies this game has ever seen.
i was spending well over 4 hours a week just on surveying (not counting moving my generators and stocking vendors)
i had a to take over a month off from the game because i lost my mind trying to keep up with the radioactive shifting. 
i don't care if the droids are super expensive to make, or if they take 24 hours to get waypoints back to me.
i just want a REAL survey droid, that will give me waypoints.

Hi,
As a soon to be MDE & an MA, I'd like to let you know that if you want to try IS driods, just give Efifourq a message. She'll gladly make you up a few, and give you a taste... (Yeah I know it's the old drug pusher mentality, but hey it's effective)
If you need the survey devices too I can do that, but REALLY shouldn't you make them to get the EXP?
