Thread: Radioactive sample damage
As they just recently started causing damage when a radioactive substance is sampled, I am not sure what the damage is suppose to be normally. I know I did it once and it wasn't too bad but after the patch I took a sample and half of each of my HAM bars went black! Half! WOUNDS, not just regular damage! Holy cripes!! If I am going to take 50% wounds across all three bars every time I want to check a radioactive resource I will have tojust plant harvesters and hope for the best. Is this due to the patch? Is this permanent? Seems kinda harsh to me.

it makes total sense...it's called radiation poisoning...
you wouldn't just go out in the field with a geiger counter and a shovel and start digging up uranium or other radioactive materials.
use your survey tool, find the spot, plant the harvester...it's that simple.
if you really want to check a sample prior to planting the harvester, go check for the item for sale on the bazaar and check the stats- problem solved.

Actually, raw Uranium isnt so bad for you radiation wise, it doesnt really become that dangerous until its milled and refined. Only a VERY small percentage of natural Uranium is radioactive. Uranium miners have to dig up TONS (literally) of Uranium in order to get just a few grams of the radioactive form.
I guess if you figure that the sampling process in SWG includes the milling process (how your able to mill a rock with your bare hands i dunno) then yeah I guess the wounds are appropriate.
I just use a mineral extractor and dont worry about it either way.

notice i said 'and other radioactive materials'...cause iby no means have deep knowledge of radioactivity, however i do know that you probably don't want to handle the stuff too much.
In RL most (not all!)radioactives can be safely handeled for a short time. Not to say this is the best course of action for anyone, and afterwards you WILL require a decontamation peroid. It is interesting to note the propertise of inert compounds that will sheild hard radiation such as gold, lead, and concreate to name a few. You need roughlyfive microns of gold or one inch of lead orthirtytwo feet of concreate. Most people recive 300 to 500 of hardrad's(ie gama) per year just doing everyday things like taking a trip in an airplane or even walking down the street. Granted my info is a bit outadate as i havent worked with anything in the feild in the kast few years.
But for game purpose's fifty percent is a bit harsh imho.
There shoudl be wounds/damage for "hand sampling" but nothing like 50% ham hits- make it 5 or 10 damage each sample...still prevetns heavy abusr of the sampling without killing the "is this worth a harvester" samples
But you are using a machine that SMELTS thigns (by all accounts here listed) so I thin maybe, just maybe it would have some kinda of shielding...
And also, you dont half die from 2 minutes of exposure to radiation...except maybe ina reactor core or something
