What exactly are sockets for on items such as the Travel Packs?

You can loot "stat gems" from NPCs that you can insert. They give stat bonuses like +2 to medical crafting, or something. Travel packs were bugged in beta because the drag and drop would store the gem in the pack as opposed to being socketed.

Ahhh thanks for the info. Never knew about the gems since I am a full crafter with no combat skills. Heck I think i'd have a hard time shooting myself heh

Are the gems loot-only items or can they be crafted bya high level artisan?

Loot only. They were bugged in betasuch that dropping them on a container put them into the container instead of mounting them too. I don't know if there was ever a fix for it (I guess not), or whether it was intentional. I've also seen one that was not mountable in a Weighted Wookiee Hood. I'm assuming that was a bug as well.

I never did hear whether they were permanent or not.

only one problem. I haven't been able to attach a skill enhancer to my pack....instead it goes INSIDE the pack and doesn't attach, even though there are sockets available. (perhaps one would have to unequip the pack?)
