Thread: Crafting station input hopper reliable/safe to use or not?

Hello,

The search didn't show me what I was looking for.
A few months ago I learned a crafting station has its own input hopper which has the advantage that you can craft with resources you put in there so they don't take up inventory space.

1) is that correct?

2) how reliable / safe to use is the input hopper? I wouldn't want to put in many resources that might vanish / go poof. Is it safe to use or are there known issues or bugs?

3) in addition to 2) would you recommend to use the input hopper of a crafting station or not? Please give a short reason why or why not you would recommend it.

One bug I'm aware of is that if you pick up a crafting station with resources in the input hopper then it bugs the crafting station so that the hopper ( and thus experimentation ) can never be used.

Thanks, so as long as I get the resources out of the hopper before picking up the crafting station nothing can go wrong (regarding known issues, there is always the unknown of course )?

There was a post made within the last week by the SWG Correspondent for Artisan (guruweaver if I am not mistaken) stating that you should NEVER use the input hopper on a crafting station. The reason he gave was that the items in the hopper aren't stored in the database the same way that other items in houses are, and it's very possible that you can lose any and all items placed in there. I had never used my input hopper, and that post assured that I never will.

The post that I am referring to was as an answer to someone else's questions about crafting stations and hoppers, if you do a search of all postings over the past week or two, you should be able to find it.

And to answer your first question, items in the hopper DO count against the total house inventory.

Thanks a lot, that's what I wanted to know. Too bad, it looked like a good alternative at first.

when the game first came out I put all my resoses in one as soon as i found out it worked and they went poof. but about 3 months later thay all came back ofter the bug was fixed sence thenI use it regulerly and use it as a storage bin for crafting. i have NEVER lost an item in one (the items were in limbo for the first 3 months of the game but did come back) and now going on 15 months and no problems or bugs to report.I have changed my crafting station and myhouse location many times and never had a porblem, and I keep it loaded to the brim

So I say go for it.

Thanks for the replies. I just thought about it once more and I think I really give it a try, starting only with a smaller amount of resources. If it turns out to be reliable I'll put in the whole rest maybe.

Indeed.

The input hoppers on private crafting stations are bugged, and have been since beta. They do not track the inventory properly. Items stored in them run the risk of 'poofing' further if they 'poof' there may not be records in the logs to allow CSRs to restore them.

This was explained to me by a dev some time ago. The message is do not use private crafting station input hoppers for storage.

Thanks by the way, I really missed the input hopper thing as well as its issue in the artisan faq, maybe that's something to add.

I did this in Sept 2003 thru Oct 2003, and then I lost a hopper full of resources (which were not returned then either). Even TODAY, the copper I lost in there was the most rare and highest OQ/CD copper ever on Tempest.

I'll never trust them again.

I lost about 15 stacks of resources out of a hopper two days ago. I was going to experiment on some muzzles so I split a stack and pulled a small amount out. That stack ran out, so I went back a few minutes later to get more and the whole hopper was empty. Checked after the server reset yesterday and it was still empty. Maybe it will come back in a few days or a few months, I don't know. I just hope it comes back eventually.
