Space Mining Friday Feature.

Although I haven't gotten around to trying it myself, so I can't say how comprehensive that guide is.

It's pretty good. To mine with a fighter, you really need one with at least 2 gun slots: 1 for the mining laser and 1 for the tractor beam. That leaves you fighting pirates with your mining laser, which is suboptimal, though the Mark III model does decent damage. If you do the mining quests, there is one where you have to get samples from about 4 systems; if you're not a master I recommend dropping the tractor beam for that mission and flying with an ion cannon and the mining laser. Getting your samples is slower, but you will be running into tier-4 opposition on that tour.

Don't forget that a well placed missle can cause alot of havok on Asteroid Bandits.

Personally, i use my Jedi Starfighter as my Space Mining Vessel. It's very fast, maneuvers great, and just looks pretty cool too.

and to answer one of the original poster's questions, anyone can space mine as long as your are certified to use the mining equipment (certified via skill boxes).

on a side-note, you DO NOT need to complete any of the Rage of the Wookiees quests in order to be able to space mine. Shipwrights can craft all the mining equipment you'd need, but the equipment does require Asteroid Resources, so if you use the quest items to mine the asteroids they need, you may be able to get a better deal on a Laser, Cargo Hold, and Tractor Beam.

You also must have the Rage of the Wookiees expansion. No RotW = no mining.
