The mineral survey tool is the right one. There may not be any amorphous gemstone on the planet that you are on.

Not all resource categories spawn all the time. Very specific resources (like Plumbum Iron or Galinorian Gemstone) may not be there.
However, "amorphous gemstone" is a pretty broad category. It may not be on a particular planet, but the "core" planets (Naboo, Tatooine, Corellia, and maybe Rori & Talus) usually have it.
Resource categories work like this:
- Mineral
- Gemstone
- Amorphous Gemstone
- Bal'ta'ran Amorphous Gemstone
- Name1
- Rudic Amorphous Gemstone
- Name2
- Stygium Amorphous Gemstone
- Name3
- etc
- Crystalline Gemstone
- {more specific types of crystalline gemstone}
- Unknown Gemstone
That's basically how's it should be laid out in your mineral survey tool. If a resource requires just "Amorphous Gemstone", then you can use any type underneath that. What you actually sample/harvest will be Name1, Name2, etc.
Huh, just checked swgcraft for gemstone on Bria and it looksa little sparse. However, there is Afotimi Sedrellum Amorphous showing up on Naboo and Tatooine.
Now, just because it's "in shift" (resource change around on a semi-regular basis) and on the particular planet doesn't mean you can find any at the particular spot you're at. If it's on the planet at all, it'll be listed in your survey tool. But if you survey and get back "resource not found", that means that you aren't near any available at that particular location. You need to wander around and continue to survey until you get a waypoint to a concentration. Then go to that waypoint and survey again to find a higher concentration. Keep that up until you find a concentration "peak" (the highest concentration point within survey range) sufficient to your needs (should be at least 50%, but 70-90% is preferred) and sample there, or place a harvester.
