I recently looted a lair and got a live sample. It looks like bugs in a jar. When you examine it it says it can be used by a master artisan to make decorative somethings (can't remember what though). This is the first time I have ever gotten something like that from a lair. It is usually eggs.

Any thoughts?

OK, I'll answer so you're no longer in the dark on this. However, once I get you an answer, expect some harassment on not knowing what's going on

If you've only looted eggs from a lair in the past, you've only done it a small amount, and you've been incredibly lucky. In the past live samples seemed to be a loot item received most commonly from nests/lairs. However, with the latest publish, eggs seem to be more common. So, the fact that you've never seen these is rather rare. Live Samples are a component for a 'Creature Habitat'. The habitat will look almost identical to a container, but when examined it will tell you thecreature type inside. There will be an option for releasing the creatures on the radial menu for the habitat. If you release the creatures, they will creature a unique visual effect before they fly away. In order to see it, I suggest being inside a building and being zoomed out from your character before releasing the creatures. The effect is different for every type of creature. However, considering many people play zoomed in, and it only lasts for several seconds, and makes no noise, it's not very interesting to the players around you. Hope that helps.
