Thread: Disposable Harvesters?
Forgive my ignorance -- I am a Master Artisan who has never made, used, or even touched a harvester. But, reading a book and hitting Sit, Stand, Sample, Rinse, Repeat for hours on end is very tedious, and I don't want to use macros. So, I logically went to the next step, and started researching harvesters. On the surface, these look like just the thing, until you see their appetites. It costs credits and power, fed to them daily, to keep them operational. I am an Artisan who doesn't hypermarket his wares, so I don't have enough of a credit flow to sustain harvesters. I also have heard that harvesters won't let you get your resources out of them if they run out of credits/power.
So, here's my proposal. Disposable harvesters. I would like to go to an Architect and get a deed for a harvester that I can plant out in the wilderness, without a power generator or credit dump, and come back the next day to find a used-up harvester with a container of resources inside. Once I've gotten the resources, the harvester goes away. No muss, no fuss, and the more casual Artisans are happy.
What do folks think of this? Good idea? Or, do I have a completely skewed idea of harvesting, and should do more research? I've searched the boards, and couldn't find a good guide to harvesting that was recent enough to be useful. Thanks!
They pretty much work that way now... If you set up a harvestor, pick an amount of time you want it to run, put in the appropriate credits & power, then wait... Your harvestor will suck up resources, burn through your maint pools, then start to burn to the ground.
As I see it now, harvestors and generators ARE disposable. I see no point whatsoever in throwing away 3k credits to move a harvestor, and lose everything in the pool, and have to start over again. Why not just delete them, make a new one, and go?
Re-deeding must retain the maint pools, or they're disposable.

The Medium Harvesters are the ones that cost 3000 to redeed. The Mineral Harvesters take as many resources as a small house and the Gas and Chemical take as much as a Factory, so I would much rather pay the 3000 to redeed than the 17-20K for a Mineral Harvester or the 50-60K for a Gas/Chemical Harvester.
Personal Harvesters take 1400 to redeed, which is a little more than the cost of buying a new one.
I thought Wind Generators cost 3K to re-deed.

I dont know if its a bug or not but i have also had the message come up saying i had to pay 3k, regardless of that, if you have the resources just make new ones.
I had to move all my harvestors and instead of paying 1500cr (once and a while i got the 3k message) i would just destroy them, just make sure you have enough resources to make new ones. Why pay 1500 to pull them up and then have to pay another $$$$ to get them going again. If you make new ones you also get the crafting XP (hehe its not much) Pick up some combat skill and do easy destroy missions that way i earn money and it takes my mind off having to grind for GCXP. Im working on driod Eng, and that takes butt loads of resources, harvestors a must unless you have tons of credits to spare.
Like i said im solo, this is what works for me its not for everyone.

great comments, thanks all! So, if the harvester runs out of power/creds and shuts down, can you get your resources out of it before you destroy it without paying more credits?
Yes you can. I don't know how many hours (maybe a day) a broken harvester sits there and burns, but you can still pull the resources out of it w/o penalty.
BTW the small harvesters (the ones you get at Eng III) cost $1500 to re-deed and the wind harvesters cost $3000 to re-deed. In other words, you have to pay $1500 or more into a harvester's maintanance budget before you can re-deed it. Unfortunately, that money (and any excess power the harvester contained) is used up during the re-deeding process. Generally, I just destroy the harvester and build a new one when I need to move it.
