Welcome to Artisan.![]()
Seriously though, while there are macros that will make mining easier, this was nerfed a while back with the 'survey events' of which you are no doubt already familiar.
Instead of making surveying more interesting, they just created a need for you to HAVE to sit there and babysit it. While you can grind XP while you survey, perhaps adding some element to keep you awake for the long ours of Survey IV, there really is no way to avoid it entirely.

My artisan alt was able to macro all the way to surveying 4. Try this macro out. You still get the "events" but if you ignore them it continues to run fine.

There are arguments for and against using macros to survey and to grind xp by crafting (the latter of which is only possible if you still sit around to click ingredients or violate the hell out of your terms of service using third party programs to do it for you)...
I have mastered crafting professions both with and without macros. I know the "I bought this game to play it" argument, I used to be a big proponent of it.
However, IMO, watching my character sit in the dirt and destroy backpacks repeatedly is not 'playing the game.' It is, rather, 'wasting time and developing carpal tunnel syndrome.' Rather, opening up a shop, hunting down resources, and selling your items on an open market is, to me, what being an artisan is all about.
Surveying and grinding arejust the barriers they put in the way so that they can eat up your time (thus getting more subscription money out of you) and, from a game balance perspective, require that more time and resources are needed to get to elite artisan professions so that only those who are truly dedicated will fill out all those skill boxes. The macros are part of the game. They are not cheating. Use them in a manner that suits your own tastes and save yourself a lot of pain.
I wishsurvey XP was calculated differently - it would be far better, for instance, if you only got survey xp (though a lot more of it) if you successfully sampled a resource you hadn't seen before. Possibly you could get XP relative to the scarcity of the resource or on the quality of the resource sampled. That would encourage people to spread their nets far and wide and do some exploring instead of camping at a 90+% point and going afk.
Similarly, I don't like the way crafting XP is based on your ability to crank out 1000's of units of stuff that noone will ever want. CRafting XP would be better if it were proportional to the complexity of the items and the quality of the items, so that you would only get good XP from making the right items with good quality resources and successful experimentation.
As it is survey XP is the most boring XP to get and I see no problem with people using macros to get it while they work on other skills. Fortunately, you can craft while you survey and you can also get survival XP while you craft if you set up a tent.

IMO, entertainment healing XP for elite prof entertainers is the most boring, but surveying is a VERY close second. ![]()
Surveying Xp is by far the most boring. Entertainer Healing XP is quite boring as well and a lot slower, but throw in an occasional chat with cantina patrons and it is not as mind numbing. At least if you like chatting.
It would be nice if survey XP was tied more to survey missions. The missions right now are so completely pointless, IMO, in that you spend all this time finding a resource, get a measly 800 or so credits, and sample about 200 units of resource (if you want to spend that much time), all to get about 700 surveying XP. So why look all over the planet for a specific resource when you can really just find the closest high concentration and sit on it. To that end players could post surveying missions for specific resources and artisans could meet orders. Thus survey XP would increase exponentially with the difficulty of the survey mission, since as it stands now you get roughly the same amount of xp per sample at Surveying I as you do at Surveying III. However the XP requirements are a lot higher. It seems like one of the only trees where XP requirements increase, but the amount of XP you get does not. Maybe I am just not surveying right, but if I dont get surveying IV soon i will kill myself, or my character.
