Its an option you can make it without it. If your making bone armor it would be Kimo scales or Voritor scales. But for experimentation you wont need it at all.
BTW if your making bone armor look at getting some voritor scales since it moves the kinectic out of vulnerable into a special protection even if its only 6%. What i found was that i could make a lower HAM normal bone segment then my master AS side could make with advanced because my dantooine bone was particually bad. But its fun to experiment with and make some parts out of.
Oh and since i've been experimenting a lot with Bone and Chitin (making super low HAM suits for my unbuffed ranger) also look at Voritor segments to replace your homemade segments. These wont be as good as an AS making advanced bone with voritor scales but it will get you pretty darned close. And yes i just contradicted myself but thats assuming good dantooine animal bone for the advanced segment
Good luck

Krayt dragon scales can also be good in bone armor. I know that everyone hears the word "krayt" and credit signs start flashing in their eyes, but krayt scales are actually quite affordable. In my experience the demand for them is actually so low that people usually put them on the bazaar for 1k - 6k each and with the recent increase in krayt spawns they are becoming more and more common. Krayt scales work exactly like voritor scales, but in addition to giving you 4% - 7% kinetic resist you gain 5 other special resists as well.
Armor components are listed on vendors, and the bazaar, under the components menu.
