When it asks you to find a type of metal or ore or whatever.... how do I know what it is that I have to find since there are around a dozen different types of metals?

Just look at how the materials are arranged in the scanner. Nonferrous metals are under the nonferrous metal heading, aluminum under aluminum, ore under ore...and so on.

When you get a survey mission for metal it does not matter what type of metal you survey for. All that matters is that it's metal and it's of the percentage required for the mission.
