They give you the same information (emailed to you) that you get by opening (not using)a survey tool. Note that you do not gets the stats of the resource only the name and type of resource. 1 charge and 1 survey tool is "used up" each time you send out a survey droid, you will (depending on how good the droid was made) get the email back in 15 minutes to an hour. You can send out as many as you wish to as many planets as you want.

It should be noted that with JTL and a quick trip to the starport you can hop to every planet and pop out your survey tools in about 10 minutes for free.

The only realbenefit of the droids is that you can refer to the email that's generated for future use and you can launch them from anywhere.

However, they don't show you resource stats and they don't give you waypoints.
